Bishop's Castle birthday gifts, Castle Land Trust, Rainbow summer sports ball, car lift share scheme, school reunion cancelled and more

BIRTHDAY GIFTS - Joe (Landy) Lawley
from Churchstoke recently celebrated his
90th birthday and instead of having
presents he asked for donations to the
doctors’ surgery in Bishop’s Castle or
Bishop’s Castle Community Hospital.
Donations of £100 for the surgery and
£675 for the community hospital have
been made, with £20 for the Wales Air
Ambulance. Mr Lawley and his daughter
Megan thank everyone for their
generosity.
CASTLE LAND TRUST - The Old Castle
Land Trust raised £1009 at their sale in
Bishop's Castle on June 30. The money
will go towards the running costs of the
Old Castle Land and maintaining the
House on Crutches. Thanks to everyone
for their support.
RAINBOW SUMMER SPORTS BALL -
Tickets are still available for a Summer
Sports Ball at the Community College
Bishop's Castle on Saturday July 28. The
event is a fund-raiser for the Rainbow
Ward of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital
and organised by Bishop's Castle Hockey
Club in memory of Harry Leeke. The £15
tickets include champagne and canapés,
with dancing to Soul Party. The fun
begins at 7pm, so call Louise Tomkins on
01588 620977 or 07760 163308. The
Hockey Club has a fine record of charity
fund-raising with recent donations of
£250 to Macmillan Cancer Support in
memory of Andy Buy and £100 to
Diabetes UK donated after a sky dive.
CAR LIFT SHARE SCHEME - The
Wasteless Society in Bishop’s Castle has
just started a new local car lift share
scheme for the town. This is aimed at
anyone wanting or offering lifts to a
nearby town, or further afield. People
can use this service by entering their
name, contact details and when and
where they want to go, or are travelling
to, on the noticeboard outside Bishop's
Castle pharmacy. If fuel costs are shared,
anyone prepared to offer a lift to others
will be covered by their existing car
insurance. To find out more, call Robert
Smith on 01588 630387.
BOARD ASKS CO-OP BANK TO COME
TO TOWN- Following the closure of
Barclays Bank in Bishop's Castle at the
end of June, the Co-operative Bank has
been asked to consider opening a branch
in the town. The board of Enterprise SW
Shropshire was dismayed at the closure
of Barclays and local Shropshire Council
member Charlotte Barnes presented a
petition asking Barclays to reconsider –
with no success. Coun Barnes also
contacted the Bishop's Castle branch of
HSBC, the town’s only remaining bank to
get an assurance that they intend to stay.
HSBC says it has no plans to close at this
time. However, the Enterprise SW
Shropshire board has noted that while
other big banks have signed a national
accord to the effect that whichever one
was the last in a town would stay open,
HSBC has not joined in that agreement.
The ESWS board therefore supported
Coun Barnes’ suggestion that they
contact the Co-operative Bank, asking
them to set up in the town. Mike Ashwell,
the manager at Enterprise House has
written to the Co-operative Bank’s chief
executive, supported by letters from
Coun Barnes and Keith Pinches, mayor of
Bishop’s Castle.
SCHOOL REUNION CANCELLED -
Organisers have decided to scrap plans
for a reunion at the Community College
in Bishop's Castle. Pupils who attended
the Bishop's Castle County High School /
Secondary Modern School in the 1950s
will now get together in 2013. Keith
Lucas, who has been the inspiration for
past reunions explains, “There are a
number of reasons for the cancellation.
One is the large number of events taking
place in the UK this year. More
importantly, for those who would wish to
attend and meet old school fellows, the
recent deaths of some popular and
regular attenders at our reunions have
taken the heart out of the event for the
present. We, the organisers would like to
see this decision as a tribute to those
who have departed.” Mr Lucas says he
apologises for the late notification and
says a reunion will take place next year.
CARNIVAL AGMNEEDS YOU - Bishop's
Castle carnival committee will hold its
AGM today (Thursday) at 8pm in the
Castle Hotel dining room. This follows a
very successful carnival on July 1, and the
committee urges people to attend the
meeting and ensure that the carnival
continues into 2013.
ELUSIVE CARNIVAL QUEEN - Do you
know who the Bishop's Castle Carnival
Queen was in the year 1981?
That’s the question puzzling Karen
Bavastock who is writing a history of the
carnival, since it began 113 years ago. In
the autumn a book or series of books will
be launched detailing the history of
Bishop's Castle Carnival and in particular
the carnival queens. If anyone can help,
please call 07967 100903.
Please forward anything you have about
the carnival, or drop it off at Union Street
Garage
Newspaper cuttings are great sources of
information and Karen has been lucky to
have help and support from the Heritage
Resource Centre. For information about
