CARNIVAL HAS NEW CHAIRMAN - Bishop’s Castle Carnival committee held its AGM and the following committee members were elected: Ann Williams - chair, Will Oakley - vice-chair, Sarah Burke - secretary and Joan Grant - treasurer. Anthony Jones stepped down as chair after two successful years and the committee thanked him for all his hard work and continued support.

He is staying on as a member of the committee. Thanks were also given to Janny Phillips and Castle Artists for their help in selecting the winning entry for the 2010 carnival programme. The winner is Tsunami Lund, aged six, from Bishop’s Castle, and her picture will be seen in print on the final programme next year. If anyone would like to be involved with the carnival next year, or have any ideas for entertainment, please call Sarah Burke on 07971 816017.

FRIENDS SUBSIDISE PANTO TRIP - The Friends of Bishop’s Castle Primary School have offered to subsidise the cost of transport to see a pantomime at The Courtyard in Hereford. All the children at the school have the chance to see Beauty and the Beast and parents have been asked to make a voluntary contribution of £8.50 to cover the ticket price and a drink.

The Friends will hold a Christmas fair at the school on Friday, November 27, in the school hall at 6pm.

FIREWORK SPECTACULAR - The Castle Hotel in Bishop’s Castle held a firework display on November 5 in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The evening was a great success and £223 was collected in donations from the crowd.

NEW PARENT GOVERNORS - Sharon Jones and Cheryl Smith have been appointed as parent governors of Bishop’s Castle Primary School.

CASH FROM QUIZ - A recent quiz at the Boars Head raised £160, shared equally between the Bishop’s Castle Football Club and the Midlands Air Ambulance. Darren Price plans to hold another quiz on Wednesday, December 2, again with a top prize of £100. The start time will be 8pm.

TOWN AWARDS - Bishop’s Castle Civic Society holds its awards evening in the town hall on Wednesday, November 25, at 8pm.

Cups will be presented to the winners of the Bishop’s Castle Gardens Competition and everyone is welcome to attend.

POETS CORNER - The next poets corner at the Poppy House will be on Thursday, December 10, with readings and music from 8pm. If you would like to have a meal beforehand at 7pm, call 01588 620541.

DONATION AT MUSIC NIGHT - More than 70 people enjoyed a Halloween night of live music in the Church Barn, Bishop’s Castle. All the proceeds from the night went to the Bishop’s Castle and District Land Trust, which aims to find land for affordable housing, small workshops and allotments for local residents. One trust supporter at the event was impressed by the interest shown by so many of the young people present. He has made an anonymous donation of £100, so that the next 20 young people buying shares in the trust will receive a free bonus of £5 worth of shares.

JAZZ IN THE BARN - Jazz night in the Church Barn, Bishop’s Castle, on Saturday, November 28, at 8pm.

Bishop’s Castle’s very own fourpiece community jazz project Anything Goes will be joined by Jim’s Joy of the Thirties, featuring the music of Cole Porter, Fats Waller and other jazz greats. Anything Goes were a hit at the Michaelmas Fair in September and with tickets at £5 on the door, it should be fun.

Proceeds will go to the Bishop’s Castle and District Community Land Trust.

RADIO SHROPSHIRE CONCERT - As part of a Christmas Concert on December 12, the Marches Community Choir will take part in the BBC’s Sing Hallelujah project to raise funds for Children in Need. The choir will be augmented by members of at least two other local choirs and any other singers who would like to add their voices are very welcome to attend a rehearsal in St John’s Church on December 7, at 7pm and on December 12. Call Philippa Whitaker on 01588 680312 for information. Carols for the choir and congregation and a glass of wine and mince pies always make this a very popular seasonal concert.

GRANT FOR CHOIR - The Marches Community Choir has received a grant of nearly £4,000 from the Local Joint Committee towards a new set of staging which will be in place for the first time at the concert on December 12. This concert is also supported by Shropshire Council’s Seen it, Done it, Got Creative arts grant.

CHURCH GIFT DAY - St John’s Church annual gift day appeal will be held on Saturday. The church will be open from 9am to 5pm to receive donations, or you can give to Phyllis Hutton, churchwarden; Graham Hemmings, PCC treasurer or Mary Jackson, PCC secretary. Graham Hemmings said: “The annual gift day appeal is a very important contributor to church funds, which are used to meet the costs of running and repairing our church and church barn buildings. It also enables the ministry team to continue its pastoral work in the town. Last year, the appeal raised £3,600 for which the clergy and congregation were very grateful.”

UNITED PACK SUPPORTERS - The United Pack held a start of season lunch recently at Lydham Village Hall. The event was organised by Tim Ward, Cyril and Rachael Owen and Derek and Shirly Rowson. After lunch, the United Pack hunt supporters club presented a cheque for £400 to Ian Sawers, the local representative of Help for Heroes, the chosen charity for this year. The hunt ball will be on Saturday, November 28. Call Tony Hinde on 07766 752515 for more details. An auction of promises, open to all, will be held on Monday, December 8, at Lydham Village Hall.

THEATRE AND STREET ARTS - Bishop’s Castle Theatre and Street Arts is a group of dedicated young thespians which meets every Thursday afternoon in the Church Barn at Bishop’s Castle. Children over the age of six are welcome at a cost of £4 a session, with discounts for siblings. The class for over-11s meets at 3.30pm for an hour, followed by the six to 10-year-olds from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. The senior class is preparing a Christmas mummers play for presentation in Bishop’s Castle, while the younger ones are working on their own version of Beauty and the Beast ready for performance in January.

The group’s leader is Cathie Woodbury. She said: “I use drama to help young people to understand more about themselves and the world that they live in. My groups tend to bond together and this gives them a sense of belonging and a whole new circle of friends.

“The members learn to think on their feet, solve problems, communicate and work effectively in groups. It sounds very serious, but the truth is we laugh a great deal and have loads of fun.” New members, including those with special needs, are always welcome.
