A WIND farm for Bishop’s Castle is one of the objectives of local campaigners.
Plans are in hand to form a Bishop’s Castle Energy Company as a communitybased enterprise.
It would be involved with sustainable energy production and waste management.
Amongst the objectives would be to see a small communitybased wind farm made up of two or three turbines.
The group also hopes to see an anaerobic digester, which converts domestic and commercial waste into methane gas that can be used to produce electricity. It is also envisages putting solar panels onto local buildings.
“We must reduce our dependence upon gas, oil and coal both for the environment and because with increasingly scarce supplies, the price and availability of these fuels becomes less and less certain,”
said Miranda Stanley, secretary and co-ordinator of Bishop’s Castle Community Energy.
“Our proposal is to form a Bishop’s Castle Community Energy Company representing local residents, businesses and agricultural interests.
“The idea of local sustainable energy production is important and the government seeks to encourage a variety of scheme.
“For two years, we have watched the planning applications for a biomass incineration plant. These were muddled, lacked transparency, raised important issues about sustainability and damage to the environment. Many have fought the proposal.”
A public meeting and exhibition about the plan for a company will be held in the Community College on Saturday, July 11, between 1.30pm and 5pm, with a debate at 3pm led by Philip Dunne MP.
