STUDENTS at Bishop's Castle Community College have sustained the improvement in GCSE results.

Head teacher Alan Doust says that there were strong performances in a wide range of subjects.

“Although performance measures won’t be released for a couple of weeks, there were strong performances in all faculty areas,” he said.

For the third year, the community college had good results in maths with 86 per cent of students achieving at least a C grade and 22 per cent achieving an A* or A grade.

In English literature, 81 per cent achieved an A*-C grade, with 24 per cent achieving an A* or A grade.

Art, biology, drama, PE and Spanish were among the highest-achieving optional subjects at the school, all of which achieved more than 90 per cent A*-C grades and some 100%, but also in science, humanities, French, and in all creative arts and technology subjects students achieved well above national average.

Eight-nine per cent of students achieved at least two science A*-C grades and 86 per cent of students achieved at least a C grade in languages.

“These results show us that the improvements we’ve seen in the last couple of years are now well and truly embedded,” added Alan Doust.

“Although there are always things we can improve on, we work very closely with our students to try to ensure success, and in many, many instances this is exactly what we’ve seen.

“We had a lot of very happy, smiling young people on exam results day, which is a joy to see.

"Our highest achieving student was Amelia Williams, head girl, with either an A* or A grade in all subjects, although there were a whole tranche just behind her who also did exceptionally well.”
