ON July 13, Shropshire YFC organised a farm walk as part of their new agri forum initiative.

Over 100 members of the rural youth organisation, Shropshire Young Farmers met at Trefnant Hall Farm on the Powys Castle estate near Welshpool.

A new initiative within the organisation whose mission is to provide fun, learning and achievement for members aged 10 to 16, whether they are from a farming background or not, is to offer an insight into the real life agricultural world. Guests, who were kindly welcomed by David and Marc Jones, met for a farm walk and discussion organised by SFYFC's Agri Forum representative Matthew Jones in partnership with the organisation's sponsors Alltech EC02 and Shropshire Farm Vets.

The farm walk was hugely supported from members from across the county's 18 clubs, along with their family and friends. Matthew, 27 from Whittington and Oswestry YFC was delighted by the turn out. "The evening was a great success, with our hosts being very open and honest about all aspects of their business. Everyone who came along was amazed how knowledgeable Marc was about his business and the industry he works in." Matt went on to explain why this type of farm was particular interesting to young farmers. "We got a sneak peak into their lives and how David is already making plans for succession." The farm is home to both beef and sheep, in which they have adopted a New Zealand style of farming when managing with sheep.

The opportunity to grasp an insight into a farm of this nature proved fascinating for members, many of whom are in a similar situation to the hosts.

The organisation and members are extremely grateful to David and Marc Jones whose enthusiasm and business mindset was a breath of fresh air. Opportunities like this are a key example of how SFYFC's sponsors provide invaluable support and experience to members. After the positive feedback and comments following on from the evening, Shropshire YFC will be looking to offer more of these discussions and tours.
