BISHOPS Castle is to show its appreciation to a man who some claim was the founder of organic farming.

Sir Albert Howard the founder of the organic farming and gardening movement was born in Bishop's Castle in 1873.

He is remembered in other parts of the world for his ground-breaking work, which continues to be important and relevant but has remained something of a secret in his home town.

A summer visitor to Bishop's Castle from the Department of Agriculture in Brazil arrived in the town expecting to see a statue or at least a plaque in his honour. The visitor soon realized that Sir Albert has been forgotten in Bishop's Castle, the place of his birth.

However, this is about to change.

Local man, Trevor Chalkley, is planning to remedy this situation through the formation of The Sir Albert Howard Appreciation Society.

The first meeting of the society was on December 13, Bishop's Castle Town Hall.

It was open to all, and provided an opportunity to find out more about this eminent son of Bishop's Castle, known in other parts of the world but forgotten in the place of his birth, until now.
