BEFORE the Battle of Mortimer's Cross in 1461 there appeared three suns in the sky side by side. The Yorkist soldiers were afraid of it but young Edward, son of Richard, Duke of York, put new heart into them saying it was a sign that the Trinity were on their side. They duly beat the Lancastrians and Edward went on to be crowned Edward IV.
This unusual optical illusion is caused by refraction and is called a parhelion. At 6pm on September 28, a parhelion was visible from Ludlow. You can see the right hand "sun" over St Laurence's church. That on the left is less obvious.
