Hayton

HAYTON AND DISTRICT WI - Eileen Pritchard welcomed members and a visitor to the September meeting after the summer break; after the usual notices of summer activities – successful quiz evening, lunches at the Green Dragon and Themeside and an outing to Hunters End garden, plans for the imminent group meeting on September 24 (today) were discussed before Eileen welcomed the speaker for the evening, Mr Martin Carruthers.

He introduced himself as a geologist who had developed an interest in precious stones and jewellery and began his slide show with some stunning pieces originally belonging to Wallace Simpson. He then travelled back in time to the Saxon era, showing intricate work on gold buckles and the vivid blue of lapis lazuli on the death mask of Tutankhamun. He explained how the weight of precious stones was calculated using carob seeds – hence the modern use of carats to value gems and then amazed us with pictures of the gems incorporated in the British Crown jewels through the ages; the small crown used by Queen Victoria was specifically designed to be worn over a white veil as appropriate attire for her long period of mourning.

Jumping back to more modern times it was interesting to learn the great diamond dealers had commissioned the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes to showcase their jewellery worn by Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe, closely watched by burly security guards. Rose Lloyd thanked Martin for his interesting presentation, regretting that there were no free samples on offer.

Competition results:- Flower 1st dahlia Joyce Randle, 2nd dahlia Margaret Edgar, 3rd hydrangea Phyllis Steventon.

Beginning with L 1st lava Audrey Pugh, 2nd loo (model) Gill Parker, 3rd labels Barbara Scowen.

The next meeting will be on October 8 – a demonstration of zine making – your guess is as good as mine, but scissors and pencils are needed, so why not come along, appropriately equipped and find out more? Please ring Eileen Pritchard on 01584 876437 who will be happy to give you more details and arrange transport to meetings if needed.
