SHARED LUNCH - Bayton Church is holding a shared lunch at Bayton Village Hall on Sunday. This is to welcome our new vicar Jonathon Cruikshank, his wife Pauline and grandson Leo to the parish. A service will be held in Bayton Church at 10am, the lunch will start at noon. You do not have to come to the service to come to the lunch. If you want to join us for lunch all we ask is you bring a plate of food to share. It is a chance to meet new and old friends in an informal setting.

HERITAGE WEEKEND - Bayton Church is holding its third Heritage Weekend on September 19 and 20 from 11am to 4pm. This year the main feature will be mining in the local community. CHARITY BINGO NIGHTS - Charity cash bingo will be back in Bishop’s Castle on Wednesday, with regular fortnightly sessions at a new venue – the King’s Head. There will be a new £50 jackpot to play for each time and this means those under the age of 16 cannot play. The bingo on Wednesday is in aid of Sands, (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society). TWINNING GROUP STALL - Bishop’s Castle Town Twinning Association has a produce stall outside The Pharmacy on Saturday, starting at 9am. Fruit, vegetables, jam, chutney, cakes, savouries, plants and flowers will all be on sale. Bishop’s Castle is twinned with the town of St Marcel in Normandy. It lies on the River Seine about 60 miles west of Paris and very near Monet’s garden in Giverny. A community visit to St Marcel is planned for next year and to find out more call 01588 638375.

NEW FILM SEASON - Bishop’s Castle Film Society opens its new programme of 16 films on Wednesday at the Three Tuns. The first showing in the 39th season is Force Majeure (15), a Swedish film made in 2014 and directed by Ruben Ostlund. WILD EDRIC RIDES AGAIN - The cry of a horn and the trample of hooves as Wild Edric gallops over Mynd and mountain in a tangled story of love and war, loss and redemption. This ancient folk tale is linked strongly with South Shropshire and in the hands of local storyteller Amy Douglas all the family can share in Wild Edric Still Rides. The evening begins at 8pm in Bishop’s Castle Town Hall on September 11. Tickets cost £7, or £20 for family of four. Call 01588 630023 to book.

PLEASURES AND PERILS - Bishop’s Castle Mothers’ Union welcomed Pam Pitwood to their July meeting. Pam lives at Radnor Cottage in Clunton and she talked about the pleasures and pitfalls of opening her beautiful garden to the public. Pam and her husband have been opening their garden for about 20 years under the National Gardens Scheme which aids various national charities. On Wednesday, the speaker at Mothers’ Union is Mrs Nowela Swanson who will be showing hats for special occasions. Visitors are welcome at 2.30pm in the Church Barn, Bishop’s Castle.

CARERS’ GROUP WELCOME - If you are caring for a family member or friend and need a bit of moral support, then come and meet others in a similar situation. The Bishop’s Castle and District Carers’ Group meets on the third Monday of the month from 2pm to 4pm at the Boar’s Head. The next meeting is on September 21, at 2pm when optician Paul Cottrell from Bishop’s Castle Eye-Care will be talking about the importance of eye care, common eye conditions and when to seek medical advice. JOHN KIRKPATRICK AT WI PARTY - On August 11 Mainstone WI celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Women’s Institute with a party in the village hall. Members old and new, from far and wide were invited and everyone enjoyed hearing John Kirkpatrick singing and playing old Shropshire songs. A supper and chat rounded off a splendid evening. Liz Humphries was the July speaker and she demonstrated how to make greetings cards using fabric and paper craft materials. Members were soon busy making their own attractive and unusual cards and a competition for the best item made from paper was won by Sheila Hudson, 2nd Caroline Pye, 3rd Sheila Leeke. CLEAN UP – A help to clean up Church Stretton meeting is planned for tonight at the Silvester Horne Institute starting at 7pm, when there will be a talk by the town clerk.

LIBRARY – Local and family history can be researched at the library on Thursday afternoons from 1pm-4pm, when free access to Ancestry is available and volunteers are on hand to assist if required. The Area Local History group will hold its meeting at the library from 2pm-3pm on Monday and follows on Tuesday with another session of Rhymetime for children under three years to enjoy fun, songs and rhymes from 10.30am-11am.

FRIDAY MARKET – Home-made cakes, produce and craft items are available at the market held at Mayfair Community Centre and open from 8.30am-noon. Some garden items are often on offer too.

COFFEE MORNING – A Macmillan coffee morning is planned for tomorrow at Little Stretton Village Hall with tea, coffee, cakes, competitions and bring and buy available from 10.15am-11.45am. To find out more, ring 01694 723627.

QUIZ NIGHT – Saturday is quiz night at the District Club from 7.30pm raising funds for the Animal Samaritans at the dog shop. Entry fee is £4 per person.

GUIDED HISTORY WALK – There is a guided history walk which will take place in Rectory Wood and Field on Sunday led by Dr Ian Dormor and Belinda Cousens and starting at 2pm. Meet by Scout HQ in Church Street.

FRODESLEY – Frodesley Park Farm is the venue for a cheese and wine evening together with a concert by Much Wenlock Male Voice Choir. The event starts at 6.30pm and tickets cost £12.50 including a glass of wine or soft drink. Proceeds of the event will benefit Prostate Cancer and St Mark’s Church.

CANCER CARE – The local Stretton and Shropshire Cancer Care group will be meeting at Mayfair Community Centre on Monday at 2.30pm. During the afternoon, Margaret Sinden will be leading everyone in singing for pleasure in a relaxed session of singing for sheer enjoyment, which is an ideal way to relax and reduce stress.

OPEN MEETING – Eaton-u-Heywood WI is hosting an open meeting on Monday at Hope Bowdler Village Hall when Sarah Thursfield will take as her subject Tudor Dress for the Ordinary Woman. The event starts at 7.30pm and all are welcome.

MAYFAIR – Lucky numbers in the August Lottery draw were 25, 234, 229 and 326 winning £100, £50, £20 and £10 respectively. There will be a door-to-door collection starting on Monday to September 18 for Mayfair, and on Tuesday there will be a jewellery making course with Karen Van Hoff from 10am-4pm. Cost of the day is £40, which includes lunch. On Wednesday the drop-in poetry group meeting will be held from 2.15pm-4pm with the theme of the meeting being ‘colours’. All welcome to take part of just sit and listen.

COFFEE MORNING – A coffee morning for the RNLI will take place at Alpenrose, in Alison Road next Thursday, September 17, from 10.30am-noon. Entry is £1.

ART CLASS – Under the heading ‘Abstracting the Landscape’ is a course to be run at Mayfair from September 18 to September 20, from 10am-5pm daily, and offers a chance to learn and develop water colour and mixed media techniques, including oil, pastel, ink, gesso, collage and mono printing. The tutor will be Tereska Shepherd, who will demonstrate and give individual advice. Cost of the course is £100, or £80 for concessions, and a fee waiver scheme is available.

DAY OUT – The South Shropshire Interfaith forum is planning a day in Wolverhampton to visit several places of worship by coach taking in a Mosque, Sikh Gurdwara with lunch and a Hindu temple, on September 19, departing at approximately 9am from the Methodist Church and returning at around 5.30pm. There will be a chance to speak with the members of Wolverhampton Interfaith Group and other faith groups about important current issues. Please enquire for places by ringing 01694 725530.

EXHIBITION – An Enterprising Women Exhibition will be held at the Parish Centre on September 19, from 10am-2pm with shops displaying arts, crafts, foods, demonstrations, health and beauty and more. There will be business-to-business networking all arranged by the Church Stretton Business Women’s Club.
