Bishop’s Castle

TOWN COMMUNITY PLAN – Last year Bishop’s Castle town council asked a group of townspeople to carry out a survey on the problems being faced by the town; the things of value in Bishop’s Castle and the desirable improvements or changes.

Mike Watkins is a member of the Bishop’s Castle Town Plan steering group and he explains, “The purpose of this survey is to provide a vision of how the community should develop in the future and to focus on the important issues. It seeks to identify community aspirations, actions, ideas and policies on a variety of issues. The survey responses will be a driving force behind the new town plan (community-led plan) for Bishop’s Castle, which will enable the town council to plan for the future, as well to inform the Shropshire County Council Place Plan. In order to produce the community-led plan, a steering group has been established to act on behalf of the community and Bishop’s Castle Town Council. This group of volunteers has collated all 110 responses to the survey and has grouped them into six themes: town development; community facilities; infrastructure; economy; development and sustainability. These themes will now be explored and developed by working groups and the results fed into the community-led plan. If you were unable to come and see members of the town pan steering group at the carnival on July 5 details of the survey responses and progress on the development of the community – led plan will soon be available at bishopscastle.co.uk/council/townplan.htm. If you are interested in joining either the steering group or one of the working groups, or if you would like to learn more, look on townplan@bishopscastle.co.uk or call 01588 630277.

CAPTAIN BEAKY AND HIS PALS – Following last summer’s fund-raising music marathon in aid of Amnesty International, Bishop’s Castle Orchestra, Castle Players and Friends are performing the 1970s cult hit Captain Beaky to raise money for Hope House Hospice and Shropshire and Staffordshire Blood Bikes. The show is at the Community College Bishop’s Castle on Sunday at 2.30pm with free entry and donations.

Captain Beaky and his trusty band (Artful Owl, Ratty Rat, Timid Toad and Batty Bat) confront Hissing Sid, the evil snake. Other character include Jacques a penniless French mouse; Dilys the dachshund who becomes a famous ballerina and marries the prince and a tap-dancing rat called Ronald. BLACKHEART ACOUSTIC DUO – Enjoy an evening with music duo Blackheart when they play a concert at Lydbury North Village Hall tomorrow as part of their ‘beautifully acoustic’ nationwide tour. Tickets £10 available on 01588 680302 and the concert begins at 7.30pm. Limited tickets will also be available on the door. Blackheart are multi-instrumentalists Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington. Their unique music is a fusion of folk, pop and classical music and was described as ‘one of the best things to come out of England in recent years’ by Fatea Music Magazine . After three successful albums and over 600 concerts – from Amsterdam to Berlin and Sydney to London and Glastonbury – Blackheart’s unique sound remains difficult to categorise. They combine acoustic instruments and the voice of Chrissy Mostyn with piano, omnichord, electric percussion, electric mandola, bowed guitar and vintage synthesisers to create a unique brand of avant-garde ethereal folk. The songs they write are true personal stories and they tell fascinating, sometimes hilarious and sometimes very moving stories about their songs, how and where they were written and also about their unusual musical life on the road.

Their new album Songs From a Satellite entered the Amazon chart within five days of release and was awarded second place album of the year in the US Independent Music Awards. Their single Christmas Lights reached No 52 in the UK Christmas Chart and they continue to be played on Radio 2.
