Knowberry WI

APRIL has been an eventful month for Knowbury WI. It started with a fundraiser for the Midlands Air Ambulance and the WI on Easter Monday with an Easter bonnet tea and skittles afternoon. Knowbury WI joined forces with Caynham and Ashford WI this month to clear litter on the roadside between their villages. With signs along the five mile stretch, the WI-men at work donned their high viz vests and collected 36 bags of litter and other indescribable items

Twelve members signed up at the first meeting of the newly formed book club which took place at the home of secretary Ann Loveday.

At the monthly meeting, members were told that Jean Hollis would be attending the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace for WI members on June 2.

The speaker for the evening was George Williams, a member of The Red Cross for 42 years. Members were told of the origins of the Red Cross, from its conception by Henry Dupont in 1863, through its work during the First and Second World War and the role it plays in society in the modern day. He gave us an insight into the important part being a member had had on him and his family, his late wife Joyce had been a member for over 60 years, and his children had also been members.

He had on displayed a fascinating shield which had been awarded to Ludlow members many time before the second world war and a picture of the recipients which included a well known Ludlow resident 91 year old Miss Margery Waite. George himself has been awarded the highly acclaimed Badge of Honour for his long and dedicated service.

Next months meeting will be on May 14. New members and visitors always welcome. For further details contact President Carol Hardy 01584 891775 or secretary Ann Loveday 01584 890819.
