WALK FOR LEUKAEMIA RESEARCH FUND - On May 9 walkers will assemble at Bishops Castle Town Hall between 8.30am and 10am to set off on a 23-mile circular ramble over the Shropshire hills from Bishops Castle via Offa’s Dyke and the Shropshire Way to Clun. All proceeds go to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

MARY WINS IN MARCH - Mary Wolfe won £18.25 in the 100 Club March draw for the House on Crutches Museum Collection Trust, other winners were Ro Sandland £10.95, Prue Dakin £7.30.

AUGUST CHARITY WALK - A 10-strong party from Cheshire has already registered on Bishop’s Castle’s second annual 24-mile hilly Challenge Walk on August 15. The walk, across the Shropshire Hills landscape to the west and north of the town, attracted more than 100 walkers and runners last year and raised £1,300 towards Bishop’s Castle Town Hall Target 250 fund. This year the organisers, Bishop’s Castle Parish Paths Partnership (P3) Group with the support of the town’s Tourism Company hope 150 people will take the challenge. If you want to join the walk log in to bcchallengewalk.co.uk for full details. The 24-mile walk costs £16. 11and 13-mile options are offered and cost £12. The walk starts and finishes at the recently renovated 18th century Town Hall with two manned check- points and a lunch-stop at Shelve. Hot drinks, cake and local beer are on offer at the end. Participants scale 4000ft during the walk and there are self-clipping points at the summits of Roundton, Corndon and the Stiperstones. There is still 4,000 of match funding money to raise locally towards the nearly £1 million restoration of the Grade 2* listed hall which opened last June and now hosts a full range of activities as well as being the Visitor Information Centre for the area. The initial Target 250 figure was £62,500.

SPRING JUMBLE SALE - There’s a jumble sale in aid of Bishop’s Castle Primary School at the town’s Public Hall on May 2, starting at 2pm. Mo Parry has lined up plenty of stalls, including jumble, bric-a-brac, tombola, a prize draw and cakes. If you have something to donate to the sale, call her on 01588 630096.

GOOD FRIDAY CONCERT - The Good Friday performance of Joseph Hayden’s The Seven Last Words of Christ at Lydham Church attracted a large audience. A donation of £160 was shared between Lydham Church funds and Cancer Research UK. Thanks to all who came.

LITTLE RUMBA DANCE - On Saturday, Little Rumba with Jess Hall give a concert at Lydbury North Village Hall. Cabaret seating has been arranged with plenty of room for dancing. Little Rumba has recently been described in a music magazine as ‘Tom Waits meets Tom Lehrer’ and the band write all their own music and have developed an instantly recognisable style which looks towards Eastern Europe and South America as well as jazz and blues. Tickets are £10, and £5 for under 16s. Doors open 7.30pm. BOCKLETON WI - Early start for the April meeting when members participated in a Heart Start Initiative where you learn emergency life skills. How to put someone in the recovery position, administering CPR, recognising a heart attack, choking and serious bleeding. All things that could save someone’s life. Competition of a medicinal plant won by 1 Pam, 2 Angela, 3 Thelma. Raffle winners were Denise, Ingrid, Caroline. On April 16, members hosted the spring group meeting at the parish hall, with county chairman Margery Whitting in attendance. President Angela Wall led the meeting welcoming visiting members from St Michaels, Tenbury, Mamble cum Bayton and Menith Wood. Margery gave news about up-coming events being celebrated in this centenary year for the WI.  Speaker for the evening was Mr Charles Hadwell who gave members a slide show and talk on the subject of Abberley clock maker Samuel Thorp and also the clock restoration work Charles has undertaken himself. After thanks everyone enjoyed a supper supplied by Bockleton Members. The clock competition was won by Thelma Young and many members won raffle prizes.

GREEN MAN WEEKEND - Clun will be buzzing over the weekend of May 2-4, with the Green Man Festival - a traditional springtime festival with live music, drama, colour and medieval merriment, including a Johnny Cash tribute on May 2 - tickets £12 from The White Horse Inn, Clun. Childrens Daytime Workshop at Hightown Community Rooms from 10.30am on May 2, to make something to wear to join in with the May 4 procession. On May 3, watch The Frost Queen’s Battle with the Green Man in The Square, street entertainers, Matt Pang, Les Amis D’onno, the Clun Mummers, Animal Man, Jack the Jester, Morris Dancing, live Music with The Endings. The party is continuing into the evening with music in the square from Whalebone. On May 4 there is pre-battle entertainment on the bridge from 11.30am with Jack the Jester. At noon the Green Man approaches the bridge accompanied by the May Queen, morris dancers and entertainers. The famous “Battle on the Bridge” follows. If the Green Man does not defeat the Frost Queen there will be no summer in the Clun Valley! If he wins the traditional May Fair opens in the grounds of Clun Castle (courtesy of English Heritage) with Green Man Fire and drumming display on the hill, stalls and traditional craft demonstrations, morris dancing, strolling entertainers, jugglers, Sylvesta the Jester, magician, battle re-enactments and equestrian display with Les Amis D’onno, live music, maypole dancing, circus workshop, garlands, face painting, duck racing, beer tent and refreshments. 12.45 - 5pm craft fair on the castle grounds. VE DAY CELEBRATIONS - On May 8, it will be 70 years since peace was declared in Europe as the Second World War drew to its end. Here, in Clun, we will be celebrating that special day with a party at the Memorial Hall in Clun. The wonderful (not so ) Little Big Band from Craven Arms will be playing music from the era and there will be a space to dance and a chance to sing along. A bar will operate all evening with hot drinks and cake available at the interval. Come along dressed from the 40s if you want, a prize will go to the best, but it is totally optional. It starts at 7.30pm and seating will be cabaret style. Tickets, costing £8, can be bought from Davies Newsagents or Brights Flowers in Clun or by contacting us on 01588 640315. LAMP-SHADE MAKING - A workshop in lampshade making is planned for tomorrow afternoon at Mayfair Community Centre from 2pm-4pm. Cost of the workshop is £25.

SONG AND FLOWERS - An evening of flower arranging with Jane Pugh and with music from the Stretton Singers will be held at the Silvester Horne Institute tomorrow, at 7.30pm. Ring 01694 722713 to enquire for tickets which cost £10, and some may be available at the door. Proceeds of the event will go to Cancer Research UK.

QUIZ NIGHT - Tomorrow is quiz night at All Stretton Village Hall starting at 7.30pm, take your own drinks and nibbles if you wish. Entry is £5 per person and proceeds of the event will go to Pazapa Fund for Haiti, and a quiz night on Saturday will raise funds for the First Responders at the District Social Club starting at 7.30pm. Entry to this one is £4 and there will be National Lottery ticket prizes.

CHARITIES DAY - Saturday is Charities Day in the Town Square from 9am-3pm when local fundraisers set up their stalls selling a wide range of items for their cause.

LADIES’ MEETING - The ladies of the South Shropshire Interfaith Forum and their children will be meeting at 2pm-4pm in the Pilgrim Centre in Craven Arms on Saturday afternoon, when the topic of conversation will be Easter and Passover. The meetings are open and non-members of any faith or none and all are welcome.

FLOWER ARRANGING - A flower arranging demonstration by Jean Madeley, president of Telford and Wrekin Horticultural Society will take place at Mayfair Community Centre at 2.30pm raising funds for the Tanzania Expedition in conjunction with Church Stretton School. Admission is £4 including tea, coffee and cake.

CRAFTS - Scrappies run a craft club every Saturday morning and there will be a craft session at the library on Saturday for all ages from 2.30pm-3.30pm costing £2 per session.

CONCERTS - Of One Accord will be in concert at Church Stretton School on Saturday arranged by the Rotary Club. Tickets cost £7 including light refreshment and are being sold through Burway Books, John Thomas Florists and Wrights Estate Agents. The concert begins at 7.30pm. Some tickets may be available at the door. A feast of music concert and buffet will also be taking place on Saturday at Rushbury Village Hall in aid of St Andrews Church, Hope Bowdler. Ticket cost £8 for adults and £4 for those aged 16 and under, and should be reserved by ringing 01694 722300.

RADIO SHROPSHIRE - On Air at Radio Shropshire on Monday from 10am-11am will be a Ludlow Constituency live debate with the Green Party.

RHYME TIME - Meet at the Library for Rhyme time on Tuesday, for fun, songs and rhymes for children under three years from 10.30am-11am.

SPRING SHOW - The Church Stretton and District Gardening Club hosts its spring show and gardeners’ question time on Tuesday at 7.30pm in the Silvester Horne Institute. On sale will also be Douglas Small’s plants which will be sold in aid of Cancer Research. On Wednesday the club is planning an outing to Coughton Court, a National Trust property with Tudor Mansion and beautiful gardens with plant sales, a restaurant and a shop. This is a full day outing from 9am- 5pm and all bookings and enquiries should be made by ringing 01694 720131.

NETWORK - On Wednesday the Network group will meet at the Methodist Hall for a talk by Pastor Brigitte Malik at 2.30pm. The title of the talk is ‘From Bavarian Mountains to the Shropshire Hills ‘and all are welcome to attend.

CAMERA CLUB - At the annual general meeting the officers were re- elected en bloc and each was thanked for their hard work during the year. New publicity officers were appointed. There had been challenges when the programme had had to be rescheduled but all had worked out well in the end. There was a suggestion that the season should be extended to allow for a further two meetings. A visit to Powis Castle and gardens was planned. Increase in membership fees and admission charges for next season was also considered. The Longmynd Camera Club ends its spring term with competition number five on Wednesday with an open subject, judged by Tony Thomas EFIAP. Meetings are held in the URC Hall at 7.30pm when visitors are always welcome. During the evening the merit award winner, league winners and photographer of the year award will be announced.

CLOVER CLUB QUIZ NIGHT - The quiz night went well with six teams taking part, we had two rounds of twelve questions general knowledge “who sang this song”. Finally two teams drew, “The Wooden Tops” and the “Hopeless” they all received a prize.Refreshments were served and the raffle drawn.Tom Hall organised a grand national sweep. Winners at a later date. Next month there will be a slide show with Dave Evans of Clun. “Old Craven Arms” part two. All are welcome we shall start at 7.30pm prompt. Admission 50p.
