NEW EXHIBITION – A new exhibition at the Old Surgery Gallery in Clun has opened. Ann-Monique Stellinga is headlining with her Welsh Hills paintings many in acrylic and mixed media. Showing alongside her are Anne Irby Crews; David Harban; John Scott Martin; Tim Nash; Judith Rowley; Peter Shread; and Jacque Wakeley. The gallery opens seven days a week from 10am-5pm. The exhibition runs until September 22.

SHROPSHIRE GREEN PARTY MEMBERS GO TO CONFERENCE – Four South Shropshire Green Party members, Janet and John Phillips from Clun and John Whitelegg and John Lloyd from Church Stretton are off to the national Green Party conference. It takes place at Aston University in Birmingham from tomorrow to Sunday. The West Midlands as a whole has seen a surge in Green party membership and elected councillors. Locally the South Shropshire Green Party has taken a very firm line opposing privatisation of the NHS, supporting public transport, advocating renewable energy whilst opposing fracking and supporting local independent retailers in Ludlow in a battle against yet another supermarket proposal. “The local Green party has a clear vision about how to improve the quality of life of all Shropshire’s residents,” said Janet Phillips. “We are campaigning for the living wage, for high quality accessible health care facilities, for much improved public transport and for an end to cuts in public services. “Conference provides us all with an opportunity to meet many other party activists. “And to learn from the exciting things they are doing in their own areas”

NEWCASTLE GARDEN AND PRODUCE SHOW – Newcastle show is on Saturday. The show is held on the Millennium Green and in the community centre in the village from 12.30pm-5pm. It includes a traditional garden and produce show, craft and produce stalls. There will be children’s activities and tug of war. A bar, hot food, and cream teas. Family fun dog show. Also a live band.

OSBORNE AND AFTER – Playwrght John Osborne lived at the Hurst, Clun, from 1985 until his death in 1994. Both he and his wife, Helen are buried in Clun churchyard. The Osborne and After Festival Group are inviting Clun residents and particularly those who knew or met John Osborne and his wife Helen or are interested in getting involved with the festival to a tea party on Sunday, from 3-5pm. WALKING FOR HEALTH – A short walk around the town every Tuesday. Meet at the Maltings Café at 10.30am.

CLUN RAMBLERS – Clun Ramblers’ next walk is on Wednesday. It will be led by Sue J. Meet at Clun memorial hall car park at 9.30am. Sorry no dogs.

SENIOR CITIZENS – At the August meeting Kent Tomey brought along some items from Clun museum to remember those who had served in the First World War. This included a brass shell case, a tunic and cap that had belonged to Howard Pryce Jones, a despatch rider who later ran the local garage, Cleaton and Jones. These had been donated to the museum by his daughter, Mrs Ruth Morris. There was also a wallet with a photo of Queen Mary – these wallets had been given to all serving troops as a Christmas present – and a collection of love cards from Corporal and Mrs Charles Wells. There was also information about the uncle of Mary Jones who was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry and devotion while under fire. Everyone joined in singing old favourite wartime songs. The next meeting of the senior citizens will be next Thursday, September 11, beginning at 3pm,. It is at the Haslehurst community centre. A short day out is also planned with a visit to Wyevale Garden Centre and a journey back along the Black and White trail. Contact Margaret Jones on 01588 640595 if you would like to go.

NEWCASTLE GARDEN SOCIETY – Duncan Coombes, lecturer in decorative horticulture at Pershore College, will talk about The Shaded Garden. This will be next Thursday, September 11, at Newcastle community centre, beginning at 7.30pm. Duncan’s wide interest implants have taken him to many regions of the world to see plants in their natural surroundings and he is well qualified to talk about plants that love shade. YEARS IN THE FIFTIES – the North Herefordshire Archive Film Group thanks everyone who generously gave their time to help at another sell-out performance of the Frank Dale film, Five Years in the Fifties , produced in partnership with the Rural Media Company and shown recently at Cawley Hall. There will be another chance to see this film with live music and a poetry narration at the Market Theatre, Ledbury on November 21. LUDLOW AND DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB – After a summer break in August the Ludlow and District Flower Club resumes its monthly meeting on Tuesday. It begins with a demonstration by Julie Pearce entitled Wouldn’t Be Nice. As usual the arrangements will be raffled at the end of the evening. BRIDGE CLUB – The weekly Bridge Club held at All Stretton village hall from 1.30pm-5pm each Thursday afternoon offers games and help for refreshers and beginners. Entry fee is £2 which includes refreshment and free lifts are available if transport is required by ringing 01694 723128 or 722438.

FRIDAY MARKET – Pop into Mayfair community centre on Friday mornings for home-made cakes, produce and crafts between 8.30am and noon.

GARDEN SHOWS – Saturday is the day when Rushbury and District flower and vegetable show takes place in Rushbury village hall starting at 3pm. Refreshments will be available. Saturday is also the date of Acton Scott Garden Club show held at Acton Scott village hall starting at 2.30pm. Schedules are available by ringing 01694 781463 and entries are open to non-members. Admission to the show is 50p with accompanied children having free entry. The awards will be presented by Edward Jones of Acton Scott farm.

STROKE GROUP – A quiz night with Ken Willis will be held at the District Social Club on Saturday starting at 7.45pm. Entry fee is £3 and proceeds will go to the Stroke Group.

RAMBLERS – The South Shropshire Ramblers will be meeting at the Little Stretton lay-by on the A49 at 9.20am on Sunday for an eight mile walk on the Long Mynd, led by Pat Buchanan, who can be contacted on 01588 661001. Lunch at the Green Dragon to round off the walk is an option.

GREAT NORTH RUN – Elaine at the post office is taking part in the Great North Run on Sunday raising money for Cancer Research and donations to this cause would be very much appreciated in support of her efforts.

COMMUNITY CINEMA – The first film of the new season to be screened at Church Stretton School on Monday will be 12 Years a Slave (15) starting at 7.30pm. Admission is £4 for adults and there will be interval refreshments available.

CANCER CARE – The next meeting of the Stretton and Shropshire Cancer Care Group will be on Monday at 2.30pm in Mayfair community centre when the speaker will be Nicola McPherson who will give an update on the progress of the Wellbeing Centre.

LOTTERY – Lucky numbers in the Mayfair August lottery were 272, 529, 638,& 93, winning £100, £50, £20 and £10 respectively.

AGM – The Wives and Friends Group will be holding its annual general meeting in the Methodist hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm. All welcome. The meeting will be followed by light refreshments.

BADMINTON FOR ALL – The new season of badminton offers tasters for playing and coaching sessions at the leisure centre on Wednesday with juniors from 7pm-9pm and adults 8pm-9pm. People with disabilities are welcome as sports wheelchairs are available and there is free loan of racquets. Badminton sessions are available every Wednesday evening. COFFEE MORNING – Little Stretton village hall is the venue for a MacMillan coffee morning on September 12 at 10.15am -11.45am in aid of cancer support.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE HORNE – The new season of events held each month at the Silvester Horne Institute will be on September 12, at 7.30pm when Bowjangles will be present. TOOLS FOR AFRICA – A collection of tools for Africa is planned for September 13, when the Rotary Club will be on hand to collect any unwanted tools you may wish to donate.

SSIF – South Shropshire Interfaith Forum invited ladies along to the community centre in Craven Arms to celebrate the end of the Ramadan fast with the local Muslim ladies and children. A warm welcome allowed everyone to enjoy the celebrations which opened with several readings followed by poems and a presentations in song by the children. On display were some Islamic clothing, prayer beads and a prayer mat, and there was a chance to have some henna tattoos. The afternoon left plenty of time to chat with everyone and enjoy the variety of shared food on offer.

ROUND TABLE – The next Round Table discussion will be next Thursday, September 11, at the Pilgrim Centre when Dave Griffin will lead the talk on the subject of How important is Hair? Talks are held from 12.15pm for about an hour at the Pilgrim Centre in Craven Arms (SY7 9PB) and visitors may take a packed lunch with them as all are welcome.

FAITH TALK – St Laurence’s Church has invited the former president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists to speak at a luncheon taking place at the Longmynd Hotel, September 23, and at a dinner, September 25, on the subject Is Faith a Delusion? Tickets cost £13.50 from the parish office.
