GREEN PARTY SUPPORT FOR LOCAL ENTERPRISE - National Green Party leader, Natalie Bennett, met business people and community groups in a recent visit to Shropshire organised by Janet Helen Phillips from Clun.

Natalie arrived by train and spent the day in Shropshire on a fact-finding mission to learn about the issues that Shropshire people are concerned about and to discuss the ways in which the Green Party can assist local groups to achieve their own objectives.

In a very hectic schedule Natalie met the owners and staff of the Green and Ginger café in Church Stretton where she emphasised Green Party support for local independent businesses using local suppliers to boost the local economy.

She went on to the South Shropshire Furniture Scheme, Reuse Centre in Ludlow where Natalie talked about the effectiveness of local social enterprises in delivering social and economic benefits to their communities.

Natalie also visited Home-Start, Ludlow and spoke of the importance of local initiatives for parents and children in need of practical support.

Natalie emphasised the vital work and effectiveness of Home-Start and the need to make sure it is well-funded by central and local government.

Her visit to the Community Larder and Food Bank in Clun highlighted the importance of Green Party policy to make sure that everyone in work has a living wage and adequate and reliable benefits so that no-one suffers from a lack of ability to pay for housing, food and energy.

“I was enormously impressed with the dedication and energy of the groups I met and their determination to improve quality of life in Shropshire especially for those suffering from cuts in public services that are leading to very real stress and worry as services struggle to access funding for the valuable work they do,” said Natalie. “The Green Party is very supportive indeed of what these groups are doing in Shropshire and the insights they provided have strengthened my determination and that of the Party as a whole to create a just and fair society that does not penalise vulnerable groups”

Natalie also made a brief visit to the Clun arts and crafts show and was delighted by the talent and imagination of local artists on display there.

Janet Helen Phillips, Green Party host for the visit was delighted that Natalie chose to visit Shropshire.

“Her visit coincides with a national and local surge in support for Green Party policies and the South Shropshire Green Party is stronger and more determined than ever to deliver the core Green Party policies emphasised by Natalie and to do all we can to enhance the quality of life of Shropshire’s residents.”
