CARERS TRUST SALE - Staff at the Coop shop in Bishops Castle are holding a table top sale in the public hall on Saturday. The event runs from 10am to 2pm in aid of the Carers Trust. It costs £5 to hire a table and you can book by calling in to the Co-op or ringing 01588 638411.

MARINE CHARITY - Julie Burgwin and Jan Robertson, will be raising money for the Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians, a charity that campaigns to stop the killing of dolphins and pilot whales and the protection of marine life at the Carers Trust sale (see above). There will also be a prize bingo night on November 13 in the public hall, a quiz and a showing of the film The Cove (12) at the SpArC Theatre also this autumn. FLU CLINICS AT SURGERY - Flu clinics will be held at Bishops Castle Medical Practice on Saturday from 3pm - 6pm and on October 26 from 9am -1pm. For more information collect a leaflet from the surgery or speak to a practice nurse.

PATIENT CARE DATA - Bishops Castle Medical Practice is telling patients that from November the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) will be extracting confidential information from your medical record to improve services offered to provide the best possible care for everyone. This information along with your postcode and NHS number but not your name, is sent to a secure system where it is linked with other health information. If you are happy for your information to be used in this way you don't need to do anything. CHARITY PRESENTATION - The Longmynd Vintage Vehicle Club held a presentation evening on October 2 at the Inn on the Green, Wentnor and gave a cheque for £500 to local Dial a Ride group co-ordinator Adrian Varcoe.

The club also made a donation to Stone House Hospital and Home (Coverage Care) to buy a bench for residents to use in the garden. The main charity for this year’s fundraising is the Midlands Air Ambulance and the club will be holding a presentation to them at their Christmas party in December. Call 07967 100903.

CHRISTIAN AID THANKS - The Christian Aid collection in Bishops Castle raised £2824 and Wentnor parishes raised £307. Bishops Castle organiser Kathy Royle thanks everyone for their generosity.

GALLERY WORKSHOPS - This autumn there will be a series of Make Space art and craft workshops at The Gallery in Bishops Castle every Tuesday and Wednesday morning for ten weeks, until December 18. Jacs Collins the owner says, “We will be exploring a variety of painting and drawing techniques and as we get nearer to Christmas I will slot in any card making, gift wrap printing or other festive makings that people want to try. A season ticket for five Make Space workshops costs £50 and these can be used on either day.” Jacs will provide everyone who signs up with a sketchbook in which to keep their ideas. EFFORTS FOR MACMILLAN - The recent Macmillan coffee morning held at the Powis Arms in Lydbury North raised £916 for the charity that helps cancer sufferers and their families.

Organiser Delia Lewis thanks everyone who came and Sandra and Gerry McLaren for their hospitality at the pub. £53 of this sum was raised for Macmillan by local resident Arthur Lea who grew lettuce and chrysanthemum plants for sale in Lydbury North community shop.

MAINSTONE WI - Miriam Ellison presided over the September meeting of Mainstone WI. Members heard the August outing was cancelled through lack of support and Brenda Deakins was thanked for organising the visit to Snailbeach Mine. The Pennies for Friendship collection amounted to £17.

Tickets for the group meeting on September 24 were on sale. Next years programme was discussed. The speaker for the evening was Nicky Simpson who demonstrated the art of pastry making. Members sampled both sweet and savoury pastry and agreed they were both crisp and tasty. Mrs Simpson shared her secret to avoid the dreaded ‘soggy bottom’ when making pies, tarts and quiche. The competition was for the best jam tarts was won by Brenda Deakins, 2nd Caroline Pye, 3rd Ceinwen Richards. The next meeting is the AGM on November 12 at 7pm in Mainstone village hall, when Sarah Screen and Joy Martin will demonstrate Christmas baubles.

NORBURY CHURCH FUNDRAISERS - A jumble sale in aid of Norbury Church raised £400 to help with the redecoration of the building’s interior.

The next church fundraiser is a quiz and supper at the Inn on the Green, Wentnor on October 25. Starting at 7.30pm, teams of four are welcome to come along and enjoy the evening.
