Lyn has a word in Prince Charles’ ear
A CHARITY champion basset hound from Ludlow will be permitted to visit the House of Lords thanks to the intervention of the Prince of Wales.
As the Advertiser reported in July, local canine celebrity Hayley was initially barred from accompanying owner Lyn Bailey to a special evening reception in the capital in recognition of the £20,000 the pair have raised for animal charities.
Lyn binned the invitation to the House of Lords – angry her faithful fund-raising partner could not come on health and safety grounds.
Together the pair are a familiar sight on the streets of Ludlow.
Passers-by can pay a pound to hug the lovable pooch which then goes to charity.
Now it would seem a word in the prince’s ear during his visit 10 days ago has turned things around.
When Lyn met The Prince of Wales on his visit to Ludlow she received a kiss but also she claims the support of the heir to the throne for Hayley’s bid to visit the House of Lords.
Prince Charles certainly accepted a letter from Lyn putting Hayley’s case.
Two days after the Royal visit Lyn received a letter from Lt Col E Lloyd-Jukes OBE, Yeoman Usher in Black Rod’s department at the House of Lords.
He wrote:“I understand that you and your Bassett Hound Hayley have been prevented from attending a reception at the House of Lords for the Brooke Hospital for Animals,”
he said.
“May I clarify that is not the case. As a general rule animals, except guide dogs, are not allowed into the Houses of Parliament.
“However, in appropriate circumstances this rule may be relaxed. In all situations the decision is taken in consultation with the appropriate House Authorities and the Member of the Lords or Commons hosting the event.
“As you pointed out it is Hayley who has played such a big part in your fund-raising activities.
“It’s great news – Hayley will be going to the ball”, said Lyn, who added that she had contacted the House of Lords weeks ago to lobby on Hayley’s behalf, to no avail.
“I’m sure the prince had something to do with it.
