Ludlow Boxing Club scoops anonymous £10,000 donation

AN anonymous donation of £10,000 has been made to help the building of the new Ludlow Boxing Club.

But despite the donation and plans to start construction at the beginning of next month a long fight is in prospect before a functioning boxing club will be ready.

Colin Richards, Shropshire Council’s conservation officer, who will be co-ordinating the project revealed the donation.

He said that it was made anonymously but revealed that it has been made by a woman, whose late husband was a supporter of the club.

The old club premises in Wheeler Road were demolished before last Christmas.

But at long last issues including insurance and health and safety concerns have now been resolved and work on the project that is a partnership between Shropshire Council, Shropshire Housing Association and Ludlow Council will start on Monday, October 1.

“We hope to have the shell of the building completed by the end of the year but it might go into the New Year,” said Colin.

He added that this depends upon the availability of volunteer craftsmen who will be working on the project.

Colin said that the unusual nature of the community project involving volunteer labour had resulted in issues including insurance and health and safety taking a long time to resolve.

“We have a very limited budget and so it will not be a completely kitted out building and more fund raising will be needed,” He added.

But he said that the project had already been the beneficiary of great local backing.

“We have had a lot of offers of equipment for the boxing club. This is a true community project.”
