Ludlow's Burway Bridge will close for three days in June.

REPAIR work is to be carried out at Burway Bridge in Ludlow.

Coronation Avenue will be closed to traffic for up to three days starting on Wednesday June 6.

Burway Bridge, which crosses the River Corve, was built in 2008, after the previous bridge had been washed away in 2007 by severe floods.

A statement from Shropshire Council said the closure is required to enable work to be carried out to replace a bridge expansion joint which crosses the road at the town centre end of the bridge.

This is necessary because the existing joint is leaking and is not performing as it should.

"Because it is ‘new’ the contractor who installed it will be carrying out the replacement work at his own cost," the statement reads.

When the road is closed traffic into Ludlow from the north will be diverted via the A49 to the Henley Road roundabout, and then into town along Henley Road, Gravel Hill and Station Drive.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member responsible for bridge maintenance, said: “It is appreciated that the proposed road closure will cause some inconvenience and everyone will do all that they reasonably can to re-open the road as soon as possible.

Rosanna Taylor-Smith, the council’s member for Ludlow North, said: “We have scheduled this repair work at half-term to avoid disruption to Ludlow School and before the start of Ludlow Festival, and hope to re-open the road as soon as possible.”

Access over the bridge for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available as usual.
