Wolverhampton Sporting Community Reserves 1 Tenbury United 7

TENBURY United boss Colin Powell wants his men to prove they are good enough to compete with the division’s best sides.

Powell believes his troops have what it takes to challenge at the top after demolishing Wolverhampton Sporting Community Reserves.

Michael Foster and Aaron Morris both netted hat-tricks to help United to a 7-1 success, the perfect preparation for Saturday’s trip to West Midlands League Division 2 joint leaders Hereford Lads Club.

“It’s a huge game,” said Powell.

“This is where we can prove we are good enough to contend with the tough boys.

“I think we are good enough. We just have to prove it.”

Last Saturday’s win was the ideal tonic after the disappointment of a 4-2 home defeat by Sikh Hunters the week before.

It didn’t start well though with the visitors falling a goal behind after just three minutes before Morris scored the first of his treble from the spot after Ryan Morris was brought down.

Paul Smith doubled the advantage soon after with a flicked header before a controversial decision saw Tenbury awarded another penalty which Wolverhampton were convinced was for a foul committed outside the box.

The home side’s protests led to them being reduced to ten men before Morris converted the penalty. After the break Morris completed his hattrick with a drive from open play while Foster got in on the act with two headers and a drilled shot into the corner of the net to complete the rout.

“Our game plan was to keep a clean sheet but that went out of the window after three minutes,” added Powell.

“But it was a good win. Everyone played to the level I would expect.

“We have been playing quite well but just not had the rub of the green.

“We turned up for the first time this season with a fully fit team and that had a big influence.”

The win, only their second of the season, puts Tenbury ninth in the table.
