Tenbury 36 points Alcester 7
RICHARD Smith bagged a brace of tries in Tenbury’s impressive home win in the first round of the Midlands Junior Vase.
Richard Wozencroft produced a man-of-the-match display and Cameron Hewitt, the former Luctonians centre, also gave a lively display for Tenbury and got on the scoresheet.
Tenbury seized the initiative in the first period and then dominated the second half to coast into the next round.
Tenbury controlled the early stages at Palmer’s Meadow, and almost took the lead when stand-in skipper Pete Stevens was held up just short of the line.
The Warwickshire side hit back to take the lead with a converted try.
The Tenbury forwards set up more pressure, and when Alcester were penalised close to their own line, Will Morgan bundled his way over to reduce the deficit.
The home side took the lead when Pete Foster picked the ball up close to the try-line and burst over.
Freddie Hughes put daylight between the sides when he converted the try and followed up with two penalties, one either side of the break.
Newcomer Hewitt, who looked lively throughout, sliced through the Alcester defence to score the third try.
Richard Smith rounded off a three-quarter movement which was orchestrated by man-of-the-match Richard Wozencroft.
Substitute winger Brett Hayward added his name to the list of try-scorers, and fellow substitute Ed Monkley played a key role in another movement which led to Smith’s second try.
