LUDLOW Food Centre has scooped awards for a range of its produce.

The business in Bromfield has been awarded three Great Taste Awards by the Guild of Fine Food.

These awards take place every year and this year saw 7400 entries from 1500 outlets.

Food critics, chefs, fine food retailers, food writers and industry experts make up the 350 judges who give up to three star awards to the best products in each cate gory.

The Food Centre had winning products with their beef (two star award), marmalade (two star award) and coffee (one star award).

“We rear our beef cattle in the fields sur rounding the Food Centre so this award is for the butchery team but also for our stockman Elwin Morgan,” said head butcher John Brereton.

“Our cattle are fed on a diet that we g row and we even transport them ourselves so they don't get stressed on the six mile journey to Griffiths’ at Leintwardine.”

The Food Centre’s Jam and Pickle team, Darren Marsh and Tess Slater, are no strangers to winning awards for their marmalade having this year already won at the World Marmalade Festival.

They were awarded a two star Great Taste Award for their Lady Windsor’s Marmalade.

“Lady Windsor gave us an old family recipe that we have developed and refined over the last three years. It has won awards before but we didn’t expect to get a 2 star award for it this year,” Darren said.

The third award picked up by the Food Centre was won by Julie Hawkins for her Espresso Blend. Julie roasts coffee in one of the Centre’s glass fronted kitchens that surround the shop.

“I have always loved coffee and volunteered to work part time in the cof fee roasting room. I have been developing our espresso blend for years because it forms the basis of all the coffees we serve in our cafe. This is the first award I have won an award and it feels great,” said Julie.

Ludlow Food Centre employs over 80 local people who make half the food sold. It also sources more than 80 per cent of the food its sells is from Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Powys.
