I AM writing to you as a retired governor of Ludlow College. I was involved with the college in this capacity for many years, during which time developments to improve its potential were undertaken whenever finances allowed.

I am overjoyed to hear of the present plans for Palmer's Hall.

It is particularly pleasing that RRA Architects of Hereford are the designers.

We are at the beginning of a new century. We already have a variety of buildings at Palmer's Hall, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Let us continue to build upon these, inspired by them, not stifled. The present scheme encompasses both the enhancement of existing buildings and much-needed provision of new.

We must even be looking forward to stimulating the creative force for education, which our college offers today.

Finally, Ludlow is a historic town, one of the leading such in England. In many much larger centres of learning, both in Great Britain and Europe, the university buildings mingle happily with the commercial.

"Town and gown" have been so since medieval times. The presence of young people brings a refreshing vitality to the town centre.

Long may this remain so!

Mrs M A Harvey,

Dinham, Ludlow.
