AFTER months of struggle, the Caterpillar Playschool in Brimfield's Village Hall is to close in March because of falling attendance.

The playschool catered for children from two years old to school age and ran for four mornings a week. In line with similar play schools, numbers have been going down as a knock-on effect from a drop in the national birth rate.

"We are all extremely sad about this," the Playschool Committee said in a statement. "It has been an integral part of the lives of many local children over the years and it is a great shame to see such dedicated provision of childcare falter and fail. It really is the end of an era."

The era began 15 years ago at Ashford Carbonel Village Hall, where the play school was based before it opened in Brimfield, and it will end on March 26.
