A £1million refurbishment of Ludlow's Somerfield store was under way this week, as it was revealed that the former Kwik Save building had been sold to the clothing firm Mackays.

Somerfield, parent company of Kwik Save, has already confirmed that the Ludlow store in Market Square will close on Saturday, November 6 with the loss of 20 jobs.

On Monday, the company announced that the building had been sold to the Scottish company Mackays, which is based in Paisley and has 257 stores across the UK.

Chief executive Paul Vann has said the firm was looking to expand.

Mackays Ludlow manageress, Susan Miles, declined to comment.

In the meantime, Somerfield in Ludlow is to close on Sundays and Mondays for the next three weeks.

Its delicatessen will be closed completely until October 25 while refurbishments take place.

The new-look store is due to reopen fully on Wednesday, November 10.
