A Pagan high priestess and a pastor have clashed over Halloween celebrations.

AbbieHemmings, who runs Naiad's Well, in Bishop's Castle, said she was disappointed by the comments from Pastor Tim Coles, of the Elim Christian Fellowship in Ludlow.

He criticised Halloween celebrations, saying the festival had been "hijacked by evil forces".

"Halloween has its origin in the pagan festival of Samhain, which is the celebration of our new year," Abbie explained.

"It is a time when the veil between this world and that of the spirits is very thin, hence the connection with ghosts and spirits.

"The idea of dressing up comes from people trying to disguise themselves to the spirits and the tradition of making lanterns originated when people used them to guide the spirits past their houses."

Pastor Coles, however, said: "Sadly, Halloween has been hijacked by evil forces. Even the practice of trick or treat puts children at risk."

He added that he wanted to see five to 11 year-olds, at a 'Hallelujah Party' his church on Lower Galdeford is organising on Halloween evening, October 31.

Meanwhile Abbie is holding a psychic fair over Halloween weekend, which will feature ghost walks, past life readings and a Samhain open circle to tell people about pagan beliefs.
