SINGER Evelyn Tubb pays a return visit to Leominster on November 6 to take part in a rich and varied programme in the Priory Church.

The Leominster Choral Society's concert, under David Hatcher, ranges from the 16th century to a work by John Tavener partly based on Eastern Orthodox chant.

Evelyn (above) is perhaps best known for her early music recordings with the Consort of Musicke. She has won a worldwide reputation for her singing in oratorio, opera and on TV.

She will take part in Stanford's much-loved setting of The Bluebird. Then she will join Louise Tucker, Stephen Challenger and Kenneth Rolls in the Mass for double choir by Vaughan Williams.

Organist Warwick Cole will switch to the cello for a performance of Tavener's Svyati. Sir John wrote it in 1995 and dedicated to the memory of the father of a close friend.

The text of this 20-minute work is in Church Slavonic and is based on the ritual at Orthodox funerals.

The cello represents the priest and the music reflects his dialogue with the mourning congregation.

The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets at £8 are available from Fletcher's Newsagents in the High Street and the Orchard, Hive and Vine wine and beer shop.
