MENTION the ukulele and many people of a certain age will think of George Formby and his toothy smile.

Four decades after his death, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain presents a different image, strutting across their web site in their black tuxedos like a musical but meaner version of Reservoir Dogs.

There are only a few tickets left for their gig tomorrow (Friday) at Ludlow Assembly Rooms.

Reviewers have used words like virtuosic, subversive and iconoclastic to describe their style.

Their music ranges from Charlie Parker to the Sex Pistols and Bach, if you can imagine any of that played on seven ukuleles.

The history of the ukulele began in Honolulu - but you won't have to go there to learn a few basics about how to play it.

Before it goes on stage at 7.30pm, the band is giving a workshop from 5.30pm.

You don't have to know about music to have a go and learn a handful of ukulele chords, says the Assembly Rooms.

Tickets for the workshop are £5 and £12 for the show.
