A TEENAGE girl from Ludlow faced with a crippling curvature of the spine is looking forward to a happier New Year than looked possible after seeking alternative treatment she says has given her new hope.
Milly Wiggin, aged 14, was an active, enthusiastic and high achieving student who had a real passion for sport, especially hockey.
She loved her training and could always be found on the pitch perfecting her skills, until recently when she started to experience excruciating pain in her spine.
Her parents tried various appointments with a local osteopath and a homeopathic specialist to try and ease her discomfort but nothing worked.
By this point Milly’s mum had noticed that her back was not straight.
As a result, Milly was taken to the family GP immediately.
Milly later discovered the unevenness in her spine and the agonising pain was due to an extremely severe back condition, known as scoliosis.
The condition causes the spine to excessively curve sideways. It affects more than four per cent of the population and if left untreated can lead to fatal heart and lung problems.
After endless x-rays, Milly was told that her only option was to undergo major spinal fusion surgery.
But she feared such an operation would have put an end to her love of various sports.
Milly and her parents were also terrified at the thought of the operation.
In a desperate attempt to find an alternative, Milly’s parents started to frantically search the internet and came across Scoliosis SOS.
Founded and run by Erika Maude, who has Scoliosis herself, the clinic opened nearly four years ago.
It claims to be the only clinic in the world to offer treatment following the ScolioGold method, which is the combination of non-surgical treatments.
Recently a new branch of the clinic, Scoliosis SOS – London, opened to make the treatment more accessible for people in the Greater London area.
After a consultation, Milly was booked in for an intensive four-week course of treatment.
“My therapist was so enthusiastic and caring. It also helped meeting other people suffering from scoliosis, as I felt for the first time that I wasn’t alone,” said Milly.
Following this treatment, Milly has noticed an improvement in her posture and physical appearance.
She continues to do a specially designed 30-minute programme of exercises each day.
