THE sight of leaping salmon is the hope of river enthusiasts in Ludlow.

But the success of an Autumn Watch-style event planned in the town rests entirely with nature.

“Only nature can decide”, said organiser David Edwards.

“Usually the salmon are to be seen leaping Castle Weir during the first half of November – as regular as clockwork. At present the water is so very low that they may not ‘run’ to schedule.”

Official news from fisheries officers is “who knows?” – the fish will only come when conditions are right. An appreciable rise in water level is needed for a late October/November appearance.

In the hope that spectators may gather, Dinham Millennium Green Trust has organised a session called Fishy Business on Saturday, November 7.

It will take place inside the new Mill on the Green and will include an illustrated talk by a fisheries specialist officer.

A question-and-answer session will be chaired by angling books publisher Merlin Unwin of Ludlow.

“This event is completely free of charge and forms part of our river interpretation series,” said Mr Edwards.

Anyone wishing to attend is asked to call 01584 861680. The sight of leaping salmon will be a bonus. Visitors will also be able to inspect the new Mill on the Green and view the waterwheel producing electricity.
