GLADYS Hoskins is part of our heritage.
The 87-year-old former Land Girl from Tenbury got involved in the recent National Heritage Day celebrations when she visited an open event staged at the town’s Masonic Lodge.
Gladys, who originally came from Yorkshire, moved to Tenbury in 1943 as part of the Land Army working on farms in the area. Her first job was working on a hop farm.
After the war, she married a farmer and lived in Tenbury for 28 years after which she spent a further 29 years in Ludlow before returning to the Worcestershire market town in 2004.
“I remember when we came, there were 52 of us living in a hostel in Bromyard Road with four of us sharing a room. After paying for our board, we had about 15 shillings (75p) a week to spend.”
