A SCHEME is being launched to help protect people vulnerable against bogus callers and other doorstep criminals.

Operation Protect, which will be led by police in Ludlow, will run until April. A series of roadshows will be staged by the police and other agencies promoting “doorstep security.”

Among those attending will be elderly victims of crime whose homes have recently been burgled or vulnerable people living nearby whose fears have been raised.

“The whole purpose is to help protect the most vulnerable members of the community, giving them reassurance and confidence so that they feel safe in their homes,” said Sgt Graham Preece, the project co-ordinator.

Agencies taking part include Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, the Department of Works and Pensions, Trading Standards, Victim Support and Age Concern. They will issue advice on safety and welfare issues, helping to overcome fear of crime.

Smoke alarms are provided and arrangements made for fitting them, together with security alarms for homes.

Checks are also made to ensure people are claiming all the benefits they are entitled to.

The project has £20,000 funding from Shropshire Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.

A total of 12 roadshows are planned before the end of April with a maximum of 50 people at each. Most will be identified by local police and invited but anyone interested should contact the police public service desk on 0300 333 3000.

Local policing teams will also host coffee morningstyle events at sheltered housing schemes.
