CLEOBURY Mortimer Royal British Legion members and guests have toured the country’s only Second World War U-Boat.

They travelled to Merseyside by coach to see U534 before going on to the Imperial War Museum North.

U534 was built in 1942 but was sunk three years later after being depth-charged by a B24 Liberator, although noone was trapped inside.

It was raised in 1993 and taken to Birkenhead, where for ten years it formed part of the Historic Warships Collection. When this was dispersed in 2006, leaving U534 without a home, Mersey Ferries stepped in and set up a new exhibition at Woodside.

The branch’s next events are a visit to the Worcestershire Soldier Exhibition on October 16 and a social evening on October 23 in the Parish Hall, Lower Street.

At the social event, vocal entertainer Fred Lee has been booked and a buffet supper will be provided.

Tickets, priced at £8, are available from Barr y Salt, Roger Gittens and branch president Ron Breakwell. Last year, the social evening was a sell-out.

The branch always welcomes new members. Call 01299 270110 for a membership form.
