Finished Cattle – 469: Improved entry but a slightly easier trade apart from the best shop heifers. Butchers’ heifers were the easiest things to sell, reaching 204.5p per kilo with a lot of best sorts 180.0p per kilo plus. Wholesalers complained of a lack of demand after the recent increase in prices. There was a large entry of bulls and the bull trade would match anything reported elsewhere, especially in the north of the country, and deadweight quotations for this week.

Prices were as follows: Light steers: Best quality to 160.5p, ave 160.5p. Medium steers: Best quality to 175.0p, ave 169.1p; Standard quality to 154.5p, ave 145.3p, also rans to 137.5p. Overall average 146.0p.

Heavy steers: Best quality to 183.0p, ave 163.7p; standard quality to 157.5p, ave 149.4p; also rans to 138.5p. Overall average 153.5p.

Medium heifers: Best quality to 191.5p, ave 181.5p; standard quality to 162.5p, ave 157.2p; also rans to 135.0p. Overall average 154.5p.

Heavy heifers: Best quality to 204.5p, ave 179.4p; standard quality to 163.5p, ave 151.5p; also rans to 139.5p. Overall average 158.0p.

Light bulls: To 119.5p, ave 119.5p.

Medium bulls: To 157.0p, ave 142.0p. Heavy bulls: To 172.5p, ave 150.5p. Barren Cows – 90: A trade which would again be every bit as good as elsewhere with genuine barrenors up to 129.0p per kilo and an overall average of 95.0p per kilo for all sorts. Again plenty of plain cows in this week’s entry. Prices were as follows: Grade 1 cows to 129.0p, ave 118.2p; Grade 2 cows to 108.5p, ave 104.4p; Grade 3 cows to 104.5p, ave 95.8p; Grade 4 cows to 98.0p, ave 75.6p; Grade steers to 120.5p, ave 120.5p; Grade bulls to 107.5p, ave 98.2p. Overall average 95.0p/kg.

Finished Sheep – 3,632: A good lamb trade. Prices were as follows: Standard lambs to 159.0p, ave 143.0p; Medium lambs to 166.0p, ave 142.0p; Heavy lambs to 148.0p, ave 139.5p; Overweight lambs to 140.5p, ave 136.9p Export quality lambs sold up to 166.0p per kilo and averaged 145.5p per kilo and home trade lambs sold up to 142.5ppk and averaged 140.2ppk. An excellent ewe trade. Killing ewes up to £85 and an overall average of £59.27. Killing rams up to £59.50 and overall average of £55.
