A MATURE student on the return to work course at the Aspire centre in Burford has won the ICT Student of the Year 2009 Award.

Bill James came to the Aspire Centre, an outreach campus of Walford and North Shropshire College, in September 2008 wanting to do something to help improve his work prospects.

He had very limited computer skills when he first arrived and thought it was time he did something to change that situation.

Bill said: “I’d used a computer before but only for surfing the web, not for any real computing.

It was hard work, especially with working full-time as well, but I enjoyed it.

“Everyone was there to learn, there was a really good atmosphere on the course and the tutor Christine Morris was very patient and helpful.”

During his year, Bill managed to achieve the CLAIT Level 1 diploma and the CLAIT plus Level 2 certificate whilst holding down a full-time job as a plastics mouldings maintenance engineer.
