Clun GARDEN SOCIETY – Newcastle Garden Society’s next meeting will be a talk by Bob Brown on the garden makeover on Thursday, July 9, Clun, at 7.30pm at the Memorial Hall, not Newcastle Community Centre as previously announced. The society’s day trip is to Snowshill on August 9. Snowshill, a National Trust house and garden near Broadway in Gloucestershire, is a traditional Cotswold Manor House dating from the 15th-century and restored in 1919 by architect and craftsman, Charles Paget Wade, to house his outstanding collection of crafts, furniture and artefacts. The garden is a mix of colourful flower borders, terraces and ponds with a woodland walk, specialist plant nursery and shop.
The coach departs from Newcastle Community Centre at 8.30am and from Clun at 8.40am arriving at Snowshill at about 11.30am. It returns to Newcastle by 7pm. Cost of coach and admission is £17.50 members, £20 non-members.

CHURCHES TOGETHER BARBECUE - Churches Together in Clun are holding a barbecue on Friday, July 10, at Hurst Mill Farm.
Meals will be served from 7pm to 8.30pm and people are asked to buy tickets in advance if possible to help with catering. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £1 for children and are available form Bright Flowers.
STRAWBERRY TEAS - Enjoy a strawberry tea on Saturday, July 11, at 4 Waterloo Drive, Clun. It is in aid of Action for Children (NCH) and teas will be served from 2-4.30pm.
ACADEMY CHAMBERS ORCHESTRA - The Academy Chamber Orchestra visited St George’s Church last summer and are returning to Clun for a concert on Saturday, July 11, in the church.
They will be playing Kadaly’s Dances of Galanta, Hertel’s Concerto for Trumpet and Strings, with soloist James Phillips, and Mozart’s Symphony No 41, the Jupiter. This very talented young people’s orchestra was much appreciated last year and they are not to be missed. Concert begins at 6pm.
LIVE MUSIC - Arthur Ebeling will be playing at the White Horse Inn, Clun on Saturday, July 11.
SEA SUNDAY SERVICE - The next joint service of Churches Together in Clun is a Sea Sunday Service on Sunday, July 12, to remember the work of the Mission to Seafarers.
Seafarers have been in the news in recent months, with piracy rife off the coast of East Africa. This service offers us all an opportunity to remember those who still transport 90% of world trade.
CRICKET - Clun Cricket Club is playing away against Corvedale on Sunday, July 12. The match starts at 2.30pm.
SUMMER CELEBRATION - Bettws-y-Crwyn will be celebrating summer on Sunday, July 12, with songs, readings and music by the young and not-so-young at St Mary’s Church, Bettws-y-Crwyn.
The Summer Celebration starts at 6.30pm and includes Pimms and nibbles. Donations towards the upkeep of the church. All welcome.
POLICE SURGERY - There will be a police surgery at Newcastle Community Centre on Monday, July 13, at 9am and at Davies Newsagents, Clun on Tuesday, July 14, at 2pm.
CADS SUMMER SOCIAL - Clun Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS) are combining this month’s play reading with their traditional summer social on the banks of the Clun river. Bring-and-share supper at Hurst Mill Farm, courtesy of Joyce Williams. They will be reading extracts from Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare – a significant change from the normal repertoire since it is several years since the group has read any Shakespeare, but should be an ideal choice for a summer evening on the banks of the river.
CADS monthly meetings are open to anyone with an interest in drama and this is an ideal opportunity to meet them in a relaxed atmosphere. For more information contact Jim or Kris on 01588 660397.

RAMBLERS - Clun Ramblers and Peramblers’ next all-day walks are on Wednesday, July 15. The Ramblers start at 9am and the Peramblers at 10am. The Amblers’ walk also starts at 10am. All walks from Clun Memorial Hall car park.
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH The next meeting of Neighbourhood Watch is on Wednesday, July 15, at the Maltings Café, High Street, Clun, beginning at 7pm. PARISH PLAN NEARS PUBLICATION - After two years of hard work, consulting all residents of Clun and Chapel Lawn, the work of the parish plan steering group is nearing completion. Some of the plan will be on show at the Clun Carnival and it is hoped that publication will not be far off. The next meeting of the steering group is on Wednesday, July 15, at 7.30pm at the Bridge Café in Clun.
COFFEE EVENING - Clun Carnival and Show events kick off with a Coffee Evening on Tuesday, July 21, that will include a showing of BBC 1983 Clun Roadshow, a draw and a bring and buy stall. It is in the Hightown Community room and starts at 7pm. Entry £1.50.
NEWTOWN MALE VOICE CHOIR - Newtown Male Voice Choir will be giving a concert at St George’s Church, Clun on Saturday, July 26, as part of Clun Carnival and Show celebrations. They will be joined by Corinne Donaldson and Jan Bowen.
The concert starts at 7.30pm and wine will be available. Tickets cost £5 and are available from Bright Flowers and Davies newsagents.
CLUN ART AND CRAFT SHOW - The Clun Art and Craft Show starts with a grand opening on Saturday, July 25, at 10am. Everyone is invited for coffee. During the morning Chris Bean, a member of the Clun Drawing Group, will be painting portraits.
The Art and Craft Show runs from Saturday, July 25, until Sunday, August 2, open every day from 10am to 6pm except on August 2, when it closes at noon in the Hightown Community Room, Clun.
Anyone is welcome to display or sell their work, amateurs and professionals alike. On sale this year will be hand-made cards and original craft work with something for all pockets, ranging from just a few pounds up to artwork by wellknown professional artists for a few hundred. In 2008, 36 artists and craftspeople displayed their work an £1,750 worth of goods were sold.
There will also be afternoon demonstrations by three wellknown local artists. Angela Martin will demonstrate print techniques on Wednesday, July 29, and Marietta Alker will show people how to make felt on Thursday, July 30. Hopefully there will also be a demonstration on digital photography and how to manipulate photographs.
Throughout the week artists and crafts people will be working in the hall during the afternoons so that they can be seen in action. Marilyn Weston will be spinning on Monday, July 27, Judith Bishop will be knitting on Tuesday, July 28, Clare Linford will be using watercolours on Friday 31st and Mellie Lane will be making artists’ books on Saturday, July 25. JOIN THE CARNIVAL PROCESSION - Do you fancy dressing up as a scarecrow or joining the procession at Clun Carnival? There are lots of different categories for adults and children, so join in the fun. Just turn up at 12.15pm on the day, Saturday, August 1. The carnival queen will be there with her assistant and flower girls, as well as historic vehicles, Knighton Town Band and Newtown Marching Band. Details in the carnival and show schedule available from Bright Flowers and Davies newsagents.
Anyone with a vintage car, tractor or motorbike who would like to join the procession at Clun Carnival on Saturday, August 1 should contact Richard Bright on 01588 640541. Stall pitches are still available for the day too. Stallholders can pick up a booking form from Bright Flowers Clun or call Richard.
CLUN SHOW - There are nearly 150 classes for Clun Show exhibits, so if you are a keen cook, gardener, flower arranger, photographer, painter or craft maker, do enter.
Schedules for are available from Bright Flowers and Davies newsagents and there is a wide range of classes including children’s classes.
NEWCASTLE VILLAGE SHOW - Newcastle Village Show will be on Saturday, September 5, on the Newcastle Millenium Green and at the Community Centre. Schedules for the show, which is organised by Newcastle Garden Society, will be available in mid-July.
