CLUN OPEN GARDENS – This annual and popular event takes place on Saturday and Sunday. It has been going for about 25 years and was set up by Rev Ernest Buckley and his family. When he retired, his daughter Rachel Johnson took over and ran it until her untimely death in 2003. This year, there will be at least 15 gardens, ranging from the compact garden of Crown House, Church Street, to the large, river hugging garden of Riverdale, home of Bill and Margaret Rowe.

As well as the gardens, there will be a bookstall run by Pam and David Pittwood at Castle Farmhouse with predominantly garden books; a Tools for Self Reliance stall selling refurbished garden tools with John Jansen at the helm; a plant stall at Riversdale House and, in Hightown Community Room, an exhibition of Ruth Buckley’s work, also including Jonathan Buckley’s award winning plant life photographs, which created much interest last year. In St George’s Church, there will be floral arrangements created by Sally Tudor and her team.

Refreshments will be served from 2-6pm. Cream teas at Castle Farmhouse, 9 Church Street, near the bridge, and sandwiches, tea and cakes at Hightown Community Room. It is all in a good cause, raising funds for St George’s Church. Tickets can be bought on the day at any of the gardens, £5 covering both days or £1 per garden. Children are free.
