IHAVE received this photograph from Eric Gittens, who lives in Canada, asking for my help.

Eric’s father, Norman Dale Gittens, was a member of Clee Hill Scout Group and he is the second boy from the right in the back row.

I was thrilled to see the photo because my cousin, Alfred Pitt, who lived at the Lion public house in Lion Lane, Knowle, Clee Hill, is the fifth boy from the left in the second row. I estimate Alfred to be about 12 to 13 years old, therefore the photo must have been taken in 1931/32.

With the help of my family, Marina and John, we think that we know the following too: Back row, second tall ‘leader’ from the left is Cyril Clent; Second row, fourth from the left, is Jim Mantle; Fifth from the left in the second row is Alfred Pitt and the sixth George Genner.

Eric had a sister, Doris. I was related to Winnie and Raynor Fletcher, who lived at the bungalow opposite the Angel Inn on Angel Bank.

Winnie had a daughter, Susan. Eric wonders if she is still alive.

Eric does not know the churchyard where his father is buried but he says “my sister had a stone put to his grave”. I suspect that he is referring to Knowbury because it says that Raynor sang in the choir with Norman. Eric also says that his Aunt Doris worked at the Co-op in Clee Hill village.

I am sure that there are people about who may have been in this Scout group or who remember this family. If those people are able to help Eric, please send information to me at the address below.

Eric concludes his letter by saying: “I hope to make it over one day soon. I would love to get a photo of my father’s gravestone.”
