Clun Valley

SOUP AND PUDDING – Enjoy a delicious soup and pudding every Friday until April 3, from noon to 1pm at Clun Methodist Church Rooms. It is only £2.50 and under-fives eat free. You will be supporting the work of Christian Aid. Arranged by Churches Together in Clun.

COFFEE MORNING – Churches Together in Clun are holding a coffee morning on Saturday in Hightown Community Room from 10am to 11.30am to raise funds for the Community Room. An enjoyable social event, everyone is welcome.

CHOIR CONCERT - Cor Merched Maldwyn (Montgomeryshire Ladies Choir), conducted by Ruth Gittins, will be performing in a spring concert on Saturday in St George’s Church, Clun. They will be joined by Castle Voices, directed by Anne Loughran, and young local performers. The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £5 (under-12s free). Tickets are available from Ruth Gittins on 01588 640829, Davies & Sons newsagents, High Street, Clun, or on the door. The concert is in aid of Caitlin’s Kickstart Charity. MOTHERING SUNDAY – The congregations of St John’s Newcastle and St Mary’s, Bettws, will be meeting together for a Mothering Sunday service at Newcastle Community Centre on Sunday at 10.30am. Children from St George’s School, Clun, and Newcastle School will be joining in. As usual flowers will be distributed to all children to give to their mothers and, as it is also Refreshment Sunday, there will also be a sharing of Simnel cake after the service. Everyone is welcome.

PLAY AREA GRAND OPENING – Magic has been abroad at St George’s School, Clun, transforming the Foundation Stage outdoor area from an expanse of grey tarmac into a creative space for children to play and learn and develop their imagination and skills. The magic has been created by the whole school. Parents, children and local people have been involved in planning and planting and finally all the hard work is complete. The grand opening is on Tuesday, March 24, at 2.30pm.

POLICE SURGERY – PC Jon Summerfield and CSO Ross O’Neil will be holding a surgery at Clun Post Office on Tuesday, March 24, at 3.30pm.

RAMBLERS – South Shropshire Ramblers will be meeting at Aston on Clun Village Hall on Sunday, March 22, for a six-mile walk over Clunbury Hill and Oaker Wood at an ‘easy pace’. Meet at 10-10.30am. The leader is Gerald on 01547 530604.

Clun Ramblers and Peramblers will be setting off for their final winter day walks from the car park of Clun Memorial Hall at 10am on Wednesday, March 25. From April 1, walks will alternate between day and evening. The first walk of the summer season is on Wednesday, April 1, and will start at 9.15am with people car sharing from the Memorial Hall car park to Newtown railway station. After taking the train to Borth, the group will walk the seven-mile coast path to Aberystwyth.

COMMUNITY WILDLIFE GROUP BIRDS BRIEFING – Upper Clun Community Wildlife Group are holding a briefing meeting on Wednesday, March 25, at Newcastle Community Centre starting at 7.30pm. The subject is priority birds in our area and the briefing will be about how to recognise and find the group’s priority target species: identification, song habitat and behaviour (with slides and sound recordings) of lapwing, curlew and other declining hedgerow and farmland target birds. The main target species are lapwing and curlew, together with barn owl, dipper and red kite. If you see any of these birds, let the group know immediately. CHURCHES TOGETHER WORKSHOP – Churches Together in Clun will be holding a half day workshop in preparation for Easter on Saturday, March 28.

After many years of Lent Groups, the Churches Together Committee felt this would be a new and different way to journey together towards Easter. There will also be an away day on Saturday, April 4, at the Methodist Stiperstones Centre, led by the Rev Don Pickard. It will be a quiet time of preparation for Holy Week and Easter.

EASTER BUNNY DRIVE – Newcastle Children’s Centre is holding an Easter bunny drive – a beetle drive with an Easter feel – at Newcastle Community Centre on Saturday, March 28.

Eyes down at 6pm for family fun. £5 per team of two (one adult and one child). Refreshments available. It’s a fund-raising event for the children’s centre. For further details and tickets, contact Mary Gittins on 01588 640143 or Ruth Gittins on 01588 640829.

CHAPEL LAWN FLICKS – The Bucket List, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, is showing at Chapel Lawn on Saturday, March 28, at 7.30pm. It is an offbeat film about the things they wish to accomplish before the bucket gets kicked. Tickets £4. There will be a bar and choc ices.

CLUN COSTCUTTER HELPS PARENT AND TODDLER GROUP – Tony Burton of Costcutter in Clun presented a donation of £230 to Clun Parent and Toddler Group, money raised through a national scheme Making a Difference Locally, which involves around 2,000 independent retail stores in the UK. The money was raised by customers buying a specific range of products over a seven-month period. A percentage from each sale was donated to the charity.
