A STUDENT from Ludlow has won a major engineering scholarship.

Matthew Coles, aged 17, was awarded the scholarship after successfully passing the Arkwright Aptitude Paper by demonstrating flair and originality in solving engineering design problems.

He also presented his GCSE course-work to an interview panel.

The selection process culminated with an interview at Bath University. A team exercise prepared by the university provided interviewees with an experience of the challenge and excitement of engineering-related careers.

The Arkwright Trust, founded in 1990, is an independent charity promoting engineering and technological careers.

It supports young people during their A-level years by awarding £250 a year to help with the purchase of materials and books.

Matthew will also carry the status of Arkwright Scholar into university. Old Swinford Hospital School’s Design and Technology Department also receives £225 per year for the next two years.

Scholarships are supported by individuals, companies, institutions and the services.

Matthew had an opportunity to meet a representative from his sponsor, the RAF, when he was formally presented with his scholarship at the Institution of Engineering and Technology in London.

Matthew is a pupil at Old Swinford Hospital, in Stourbridge.
