A FASCINATING insight into life in south Shropshire at the turn of the 20th century has been published.

Border Wanderings, a collection of more than 200 Edwardian postcards depicting rural life between 1906 and 1935, is the culmination of three years work by Clun resident David Evans.

All the photos were taken by renowned photographer, the late Robert Newton Heyworth, who started capturing the sights of south Shropshire and north Herefordshire shortly after moving from Lancashire to Knighton in 1906.

The book includes village life across the two counties, from Bishop’s Castle to Brampton Bryan, and Clun to Craven Arms.

“I started collecting the postcards after I retired nine years ago and began work on the book in 2005,” said David, who is 69.

“In my opinion, Robert Heyworth was one of the leading photographers in this area and I’ve learned so much while putting the book together.”

David said he left out several hundred postcards in compiling the book.

“I collected the postcards from fairs I’ve been to around the country, and also over the internet and from other collectors.”

He said the book is on sale in most local bookshops and Tourist Information Centres, priced at £16.95.
