FIREFIGHTERS spent more than 19 hours battling a barn fire near the south Shropshire border.

Crews arrived at Whitestones Farm, near Richards Castle, shortly after 1am yesterday to find two farm buildings well alight.

Over the course of the day crews from Leintwardine, Kingsland, Leominster, Tenbury Wells, Bromyard, Kington, Hereford and Bewdley attended.

Alec Mackie, for the fire service, said the barns contained a large amount of straw and hay, and that the fire also spread to wood at the back of the buildings.

The fire was eventually put out at around 6.40pm.
