Aldi will spoil the town's reputation THE proposed new Aldi superstore (Advertiser, February 28) is wrong for Ludlow because it is an historic little town and it will spoil its reputation.

On the other hand, it could be good for Ludlow because it will bring more people to spend their money either in the town or the spectacular castle and surroundings.

I also think that Ludlow should not have an Aldi because there will be more cars going through Ludlow than there are now and there is also the problem of pollution and cheaper alcohol for under-age drinkers.

Local history service is available in library EACH Tuesday afternoon in Ludlow Library, volunteers from the Ludlow Historical Research Group are available to help with enquiries on local and family history.

In three years, we have had nearly 400 enquiries and we try to give guidance and practical help on how research can be taken further.

Ludlow was the first town outside Shrewsbury to run such a service with initial assistance from Shropshire Archives, and now Bridgnorth and Oswestry have similar teams of volunteers.

Recently six of the Bridgnorth team came to Ludlow to exchange ideas and practical tips and this proved very useful.

In both towns, over half of our enquiries relate to family history but there are also questions on house history, public buildings, industrial and agricultural developments and particular events and personalities.

Ludlow is fortunate in having a wealth of historical records with good access to these in Ludlow Library.

The Ludlow Local History Advice Service is available every Tuesday in Ludlow Library, from 2.30 to 4.30pm, and leaflets are available in Ludlow Library and the Tourist Information Centre.

Three guidelines to reduce our cancer risk WITH new scientific studies being published all the time, it is easy to get confused about how our lifestyles can affect our risk of cancer.

This is why World Cancer Research Fund published a report last November that looked at all the evidence available before making 10 recommendations. After not smoking, these recommendations offer the best advice on preventing cancer available anywhere.

These are available on our website at www.wcrf-uk.org and we have now grouped these recommendations into three simple guidelines that sum up how we can reduce our cancer risk.

These include using mostly plant foods, limit red meat and avoid processed meat; be physically active every day for 30 minutes or more; and to aim to be a healthy weight throughout life.

We have poroduced a booklet that explains these guidelines in more depth, and your readers can download it or order it from our website at www.wcrf-uk.org/publications.

Three million suffer chronic kidney disease Kidney Research UK's annual London Bridges Walk event is taking place on Sunday, July 6 and starts at Potters Field Park near Tower Bridge.

The walk is a great way for the charity to raise vital funds while helping to raise awareness of kidney disease in the UK. We would like to encourage your readers to take part and have a great day out in London for all the family.

Your support will allow us to continue funding research into finding a cure for kidney disease, as well as raising awareness of what you can do to ensure kidney health. On the day there will be a welcome area and starting point where Nick Owen (BBC News 24 presenter) will be getting the event underway.

Right now, the lives of over three million people in the UK are threatened by chronic kidney disease, and with your readers help we can go on funding life saving research across the country.

If you would like to take in the London Bridges walk 2008 please contact Emma Dowler on 01384 340783.
