Photo Space in Ludlow is holding an exhibition of photographs and hosting a talk by two top photographers to mark the 20th anniversary of Refugee Week, an annual event which this year runs until Sunday, June 24, to mark the contribution, creativity and resilience of refugees.
Titled ANON, the exhibition of images by photographers Paul Hill and Maria Falconer will be held at the Photo Space in Ludlow from Saturday, June 23 to Saturday, July 28.
The exhibition, which is free, is open from Wednesday to Saturday,10am until 5pm at the Photo Space in Castle Street, and Paul and Maria, who volunteered to work with refugees in Greece, will talk about the project on Saturday, 2-4pm. Tickets are £3 on the door.
It was a challenging and heart-breaking experience for them both, and now that they have returned they want to continue to support refugees in whatever way they can.
Whilst in Greece they made a photographic work entitled ANON, partly as a comment on the status of the refugees and partly out of respect for individuals' privacy and security.
ANON has been exhibited at L'Espace Pointese Vue gallery in Lauzerette in France and the Library of Birmingham.
The exhibition is part of Refugee Week, a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events to celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK, and to encourage a better understanding between communities. Refugee Week started in 1998 as a direct reaction to hostility in the media and society in general towards refugees and asylum seekers. It is now one of the leading national initiatives working to counter this negative climate, defending the importance of sanctuary and the benefits it can bring to both refugees and host communities.
The Photo Space was founded by Peter Jones and his wife Lucy in November 2016 to promote the art of photography by exhibiting work of established local, British and international photographers and by running workshops events and artist interviews to encourage emerging talent.
