A TEENAGER who is excelling in girls' cricket is this year's Hereford Times Ted Woodriffe Award winner.

Harriet Shuker, from Fownhope, led the Herefordshire Under-13 girls team to five county games last season against Wiltshire, Cornwall, Warwickshire Development and Wales Under-12s.

Against Warwickshire, Shuker had a fantastic game, scoring 128 runs as well as taking eight wickets and five catches.

"I think that was my best day because everything went on my side," said Harriet, who is undertaking a scholarship at Shrewsbury School.

I just want to go as far as I can in cricket."

Harriet added that she is inspired by what the England Women's team achieved last year.

"It's great that the sport is being promoted," she said.

"I think there's definitely a lot of talent in Herefordshire."

Harriet's exploits led to her picking up the batting award for the under-13s at Herefordshire Cricket presentation evening and she is ranked number one across all county age groups.

However, here bowling figures are also impressive, with her performance against Warwickshire helping her being the number three bowler in all age groups.

As well as playing for Herefordshire, Shuker has also starred for Brockhampton's fourth team and the ladies, as well as Worfield Women's, who play in West Midlands League Division One.

While for Shropshire, she played for the under-15, under-17 and women's first XIs and had the best bowling and fielding statistics for the under-15s.

She was also second in the batting statistics, scoring a total of 225 runs and was the only player to score a half century last season, doing so on two occasions.

And if that wasn't enough, Harriet's exploits led to her being selected to play for the national festivals team in Barbados, which came home undefeated.

Anna Robertson has coached the teenager since the age of nice and says she has really grown in confidence.

"As a coach that is all you ever want to see is players to succeed and help them achieve their personal goals," she said.

"Harriet has the right attitude and has a natural ability to really go far in cricket and be a role model for other young girls out there who are playing."

Steve Watkins, operations director at Herefordshire Cricket Ltd, added that Harriet's passion for the game has been obvious ever since she picked up a bat for the first time.

"We are very proud she plays for our county and her performances help inspire the other young players around her," said Watkins.

"We are all looking forward to seeing what the 2018 season brings.

"As long as she continues to enjoy the sport and work hard to get better, she undoubtedly has the potential to go a very long way."
