A BAKE off will be a feature of Bitterley’s biggest day of the year.

Bitterley is gearing up for the bi-annual Bitterley Summer Fete on Saturday (July 15).

The fete will launch the first Bitterley Bake Off, supported by Swifts Bakery of Clee Hill.

John Swift, fifth generation baker at Swifts Bakery and a star of BBC's Victorian Bakers, will be judging the cakes with prizes for the winners. All of the entries will be sliced and sold at the tea stand afterwards.

Chris Neal, retired head of Hawkeye, is back this year bringing a selection of his birds of prey. Usually a contender at much larger county events, he is donating his time and wealth of experience to give local people at Bitterley Summer Fete a falconry display to help raise funds for the church.

Husband-and-wife team Roger and Judi Brown from Knowbury have been training and competing in dog agility since 2004. They took up agility as a way of exercising and bonding with their rescue dogs and will be putting on a display at the fete.

Other competitions include the popular ‘garden-on-a-plate’ design competition judged head teacher, Will Davies of Bitterley Primary School, archery from Archers of Teme, skittles and chicken roulette. There will be a bouncy castle, pony rides, family games, races, and face painting.

Butcher Andrew Francis will be running the barbeque, there will a beer tent, tea, homemade cakes and ice cream from Dream Dairys.

“We have pulled out the stops this year to make this the best ever Bitterley Summer Fete,” said Katharine Wheeler, hosting the event.

All the proceeds from the summer fete will go towards Bitterley and Middleton Churches.
