AN eminent organist whose career has taken him from Hereford Cathedral to the world stage and who has been dubbed one of the ‘seven wonders of the organ world’ is to play in Hay-on-Wye.

David Briggs At The Organ is a programme of works by the internationally renowned classic organist to be performed at St Mary’s Church where the fine Bevington organ has been tuned in readiness.

David, 54, started his career as assistant organist at Hereford Cathedral before becoming the organist of Truro and Gloucester Cathedrals.

Heavily influenced by prolific French composer, Jean Langlais, with whom he studied interpretation and improvisation in Paris and French organist, Pierre Cochereau, whose remarkable cassette recordings he spent 11 years transcribing, David is regarded as one of the world's finest improvisers.

He left Gloucester to pursue a career as a freelance concert organist and composer, becoming artist in residence at St James Cathedral, Toronto in 2012. He now lives in, Boston, Massachusetts and is Organist Emeritus at Gloucester Cathedral. He performs around the world and also gives regular masterclasses at the Royal Northern College of Music and Cambridge University, where he studied.

His programme in Hay will include works by Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens, César Franck, J.S. Bach, Charles Marie Widor and Louis Vierne.

The concert is at 7.30pm on Tuesday, May 30.
