THE champagne was flowing at Bishop's Castle after they were crowned champions of Montgomeryshire League Division Two following their 3-3 draw with Llangedwyn on Saturday.

And manager Dan Dawson believes his players are good enough to challenge for honours next year as well as they take their place in Division One.

He said: “We’ve got a good young bunch of lads with four or five from the high school. We also have two or three more experienced players in there which is important.

“We’re going to give Division One a go, the players are certainly could enough for that league.

“We’ve played teams from there in the cups and we face Waterloo Rovers in the final of the Tanners Town Cup – they look like they’re going to win that division to that will be a good test for us.”

And although Castle have secured the title and promotion, Dawson said there was still plenty to play for going into the last four league games.

“We haven’t lost a game yet so it would be good to keep that record until the end of the season and the lads want to reach 100 goals – we’re on 80 at the moment.”

In the Herefordshire County League, Tenbury United’s hopes of lifting the Premier Division title suffered a massive set-back as they were beaten 1-0 at Ewyas Harold.

That result means that the Palmers Meadow side are ten points behind leaders Hinton with four games to play. They were due to play the first of those at home to Orleton Colts on Tuesday and a defeat would have ended their hopes.

In Division One, Woofferton drew 1-1 at Wellington Town in an entertaining mid-table tussle in spite of having two men sent off.

Si Bradley handed the Blues the lead on 20 minutes only for striker Andrew Pugh to see red after picking up two first-half bookings.

Wellington levelled after the break and although Tom Ballard received his marching orders five minutes from time, Woofferton defended well to pick up a point.

Club spokesman David Thomas said: ’'It was obviously disappointing to lose two players in a game that we should really have won. For the first half hour, when we had 11 players on the pitch, we were the better side, taking the lead and passing the ball really well.

“Second place in the league seems out of reach now, but we have to play out the last four games as best we can and plan ahead for the 2017/18 season.

Hinton Reserves are the visitors to Haynall Lane on Saturday.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Brown Clee in Division One of the Sportsjam Leage as they went down 2-0 at home to Riverside.

They return to action on Saturday with a daunting trip to league leaders Shrewsbury Juniors while in the Premier Division, Church Stretton take on Prees and Clee Hill United are at home to Childs Ercall in the League Cup.
