LUDLOW Golf Club celebrated a first major scratch victory in a men’s competition for more than 50 years having lifted the Shropshire & Herefordshire President’s Plate.

Neill Smith’s B team won the foursomes contest with success in the home and away legs against Bridgnorth in spite of a worrying start to the second clash.

The visitors were behind in all three matches before Nick Apperley and Andy Dixon turned the tide with five holes on the bounce to go three up after the 10th before closing out the result three and two.

Rob Fish and Ross Magill dominated after losing the first hole to come out on top by five, making sure the stellar show in beating both Leominster and Llanymynech 5-1 in the earlier rounds did not go to waste.

Ludlow’s seniors also landed some silverware by coming out on top in the Tom Smart Trophy.

The club hosted the 18-team event and the team of captain David Hughes, Geoff Sharrad, Phil Morris and Mike Miles saw off Oswestry on countback to win the cup for the second time.

Lee Northwood won Division One of the club’s March Stableford by a whisker from rivals Colin Spanner and Mark Brabazon, his 40-point haul being enough to beat each rival by one.

Guy Jordan scored 41 points to beat runner-up Ray Reynolds by a single score in Division Two and lift the Prize Winners Trophy, while Graham Boden maintained the upper hand in Division Three, again by one, from Mike Groves.

Meanwhile, the ladies hope to give their golf skills a helping hand by engaging in the power of positive thought and targeted goals.

A sports psychology seminar ran by John Hitchin focused on beating gamesmanship and the ability to recover from a poor start.
