CAPTAIN Ed Gough is urging Tenbury not to blow their hard-earned shot at promotion after toppling leaders Market Drayton 27-14.

Callum Spires, James Martin-Smith, Ben Spires and Greg Powell secured the bonus-point success with Gough kicking two conversions and a penalty to push the Palmer’s Meadow club up to second.

Tenbury lead Greyhound and Aldridge by four points but each rival has an extra game to play, while Gough’s men end the campaign with three road trips.

But crucially, Tenbury travel to the bottom two before going to Aldridge on the final day with the rest of the top four still to face each other.

And with back-markers Stourport up next on February 18, Gough warned his troops not to expect an easy ride.

“The others all face a fight amongst each other now,” said Gough. “It could go down to a battle between three teams, I wouldn’t have thought four because one of them realistically has to lose along the way.

“I think we are in a good place and I'm not worried about playing away. We have improved in each of our past three games, playing that little bit better every time and we have to keep that going.

“There is no room for complacency just because we’re playing Stourport, we need to carry forward our momentum and if we do, we will be fine and in there on that last weekend.

“We’re not thinking about Aldridge or Warley. The next game is Stourport and we need to win, only then can we look at what else is happening.”

On the Market Drayton display, Gough added: “It was a good performance and it could be key that we got a bonus point and they didn’t.

“We were up for it but while we were happy with the win, we still haven’t hit the performance levels we expect of ourselves.

“It was like we were on autopilot. We knew what to do with them, they have a very dominant pack so we had to be direct with them which they didn’t like at all.

“We stopped their scrum marching and with one of the smallest packs in the league that was quite a big thing.

“I have to admit we are still making silly little errors, knocking it on or giving away the ball, but we did build some good phases.

“Against Chaddesley and Greyhound we were only getting to three phases whereas against Market Drayton we got it up to four or five and that really hurt them, their defence crumbled and it made our lives easier.

“I wish I could say we were awesome and played well for 80 minutes but, afterwards, we felt we were a long way off playing anything like as well as we could.

“That said, we were pretty chuffed. We knew it was a case of win or stay in this league for another season. Now, we have a chance.”
