THERE has been a chance to learn about the discovery 30 years ago of one of the most important archaeological finds in Shropshire.

A series of activities has been staged at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms in connection with the Shropshire Mammoth.

This included exhibitions and a talk by Dr Adrian Lister.

The mammoth was discovered by Mrs Eve Roberts in September 1986 who noticed large bones protruding from a pile of clay while out walking in the gravel quarry, at Condover.

Dr Lister played a central part in the project.

He is a research leader in the Department of Earth Sciences of the Natural History Museum and has written nearly 200 scientific papers and his two books on mammoths have sold more than 60,000 copies in six languages.

The Condover mammoths represent one of the most significant recent finds of fossil mammals from the British Late Quaternary [Ice Age].
